Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to FunnyLady Sonya D. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, FunnyLady thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Although I’ve worked on many projects and have appeared on many TV programs, the most meaningful project is the one I’m creating now. My “COMICSLIVVE”
Talk Show.
“Yes, there are some AMAZING Comedians out here and it’s great to witness their
National Exposure, but there’s also MANY amazing comedians that are selling out
arenas & concerts. That would be great for their own sitcom or movie…but if you’re
not in blockbuster movies or have a hit show or on major tours, these artists are
overlooked by the industry. This is where COMICS LIVVE come in!
Acknowledging National Comedians in a Major Way! Showcasing Artists from around
the world.
If you love The Jimmy Kimmel, Ellen Degeneres Show, etc
you will LOVE ComicsLivve! Definitely not your average talk show.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Funnylady Sonya D is a 26yr veteran of comedy.
It all started with a $50 “I DARE YOU TO GET ON STAGE” Bet.
Seen on HBO Def Comedy Jam (3) Seasons, Comedy Central,
Showtime, BET Comic View…more.
I’ve graced the stage with the likes of: D.L. Hughley, Mike Epps, Carlos Mencia,
Bernie Mac, Adele Givens, Chris Tucker, Monique, Martin Lawrence,
Larry the Cable Guy, Kevin Hart, Dave Chappelle, Ced The Entertainer,
Steve Harvey, Jamie Foxx, Ricky Smiley, Kat Williams, Tracy Morgan,
Jay Anthony Brown…many more.
Nominated in the “Book Of Who’s Who” for being the 1st African American Female Comedian
to ever open/run a comedy club. 2005-2011
I promote a National Comedy Tour per year. Next Tour: “These Queens Wear Crowns”.
The Tour will feature 64 Women In Entertainment. Female Comedians, Spoken Word Artists
& Musicians. Producing Women Encouragement & Empowerment
Not to toot my own horn, but I’m probably one of the most “Quick Witted” comedians in the game.
Not Female. Not Male. In the comedy game…period
CEO: Standup & Laugh Tour: Event & Productions
CEO: SuperDealPrinting: Marketing, Advertising, Design & Print.
CEO/Producer: ComicsLivve
I’m most proud of my ability to tackle almost anything and come out on top.
I love the fact I can execute almost anything I create. From comedy shows, tours
to television and film. “Funnylady Sonya D”, is just not a name…it’s a BRAND!
The entertainment business is mostly MALE driven and I’m BLESSED to be able
to hang with the best of them!
I’m a visionary. I see what others can even phantom. I’m a THINK OUTSIDE THE
BOX sorta woman. Nothing is really a challenge, unless you make it one.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Well, due to the fact I’m a motivational speaker, I attempt to speak TRUTH and my truth about social media is this:
We don’t OWN Facebook, IG, tiktok… so I don’t work hard building them.
**I literally started my IG page in 2021.
I OWN my own BRAND. My Name. My websites.
I work hard at bringing people to what I own to collect
REAL communication…which is the DATA. Names, emails,
contact numbers.
*I can’t email or text 980 people on my IG page because I can’t
“SEE their personal info. But I CAN email, text and mail an event postcard
to the 283,000+ REAL (not robots. Not fake accounts) supporters on my websites.
Followers and supporters are totally different.
“Followers” simply read and LIKE your postings. Watch everything you post.
“Supporters” see what you post and purchase your products, event tickets, spend money.
Now, how did I build my supporters on MY website? After each show I pass
out “Subscribe/Follow” cards for people to subscribe to my websites. it’s
their choice if they want to follow my social media.
I’m not saying don’t use social media or grow your social media, I’m just saying
don’t work hard building someone else’s platform. The more content posted
on these social media pages by you/us…the CEO’s get the “millions of dollars”
leaving you having to get 10,000-$50,000+ views before they even pay you $100
If I’m not posting something that benefits what I’m doing (comedy shows, etc)
then I don’t post on social media. Build your own BRAND!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The ability to take your GOD Given talent and share it with the world is…priceless.
Making complete strangers laugh and watch them fall in love with you
(as an artist) is simply amazing!
The most rewarding aspect of being a comedian comes when my
fans have an emotional response to my craft. be it a laugh, or wanting to
talk photos as memories and tell you how much they enjoyed you
or how you made their day/night. When you find out someone
has driven an hour just to see your shows.
Just hearing, “WE LOVED YOUR SHOW”, is what keeps me going
as a professional comedian. The real reward is the connection
you make with the people.
