We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Funmi Agboola a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Funmi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.

One of the biggest things my parents have taught me is that we should do the best with the cards we’re dealt. And if we’re lucky enough to get opportunities to grow, we should give our best to maximize that opportunity. Not only for ourselves but for others if we can.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?

CandleLux Co. launched in June 2020, is a brand of handmade home products, including body mists and candles. Our products are handmade with the purest oils, soy blend waxes, and organic alcohol. No matter the occasion, CandleLux candles are a whole mood. The primary goal of CandleLux Co. is to make others feel better about themselves. More specifically, our mission statement is to inspire self-confidence and peace through quality products.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

Something I had to unlearn is not being assertive with my decisions. A supervisor at an old job encouraged me to be more confident in my decisions and it’s something I’ve held on to since then. He said “you’re usually right. stand firm in what you think the answer may be. If you fail, you fail but at least you now know where to go from there.”

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?

When I was really active with CandleLux, the best source of new clients for me was word of mouth. I truly believe its the best way to grow a small business. Get people talking online and in person.
