We recently connected with Froy Cervantes and have shared our conversation below.
Froy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
This gym is a bit different than the rest as in we offer a less intimidating environment from which anyone can comfortably learn the art of boxing. We’ll show you the ropes and how to stay off them but it’s all at your own pace. We’re not competing for tournaments here, we just want to learn and enjoy the sport. It’s a community of boxers and boxing fans alike. We train; we get in the ring together and release our stress. Then we touch gloves and do it again tomorrow.
Froy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello, My name is Froylan Cervantes and I own and operate Boxr Station in San Antonio Texas. My gym has a rugged industrial look to it and has plenty of punching bags to keep you sharp. I offer classes for those who are new to the sport or wanting to get a good boxing workout in. These workouts are great because true boxing training is the heart of our classes. The passion for the sport shows in the gym, on the walls, wrapped around the heavy bag frames or lighting your area. This gym is different because it makes you feel like a World Champion training in a movie. We’re also a non competition gym so our doors are open to all boxing fans, not just the ones wanting to compete.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Staying true to the sport. Boxing is my passion and everyone in the gym can tell when they walk in. Everything in this gym was designed and put together by myself. I take the sport very seriously but at the same time, allow the atmosphere to be most beneficial for everyone here. Professional or not.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Hands on work with some of the best fighters in San Antonio early on. From the beginning months of the gym, I was already working with a World Champion and his brother who would be come a World Champlion less than 6 months later. Working with high level athletes always makes you work harder and pick up on skills to then help the fighters in return. The gym is currently used by professional fighters simply becuase they love the gym and the work I do in the ring with them. I take it serious every time and in the end; that’s what they need.
