Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to From Birth To Death Devin John & Brandon Lee . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
From Birth To Death, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Devin: my dad played the drums in bands and taught me how to play as well, and my parents introduced me to my favorite bands and musicians from a very young age. I was in my first band at the age of 10, and played my first show at the age of 11, and from there I knew this is what I wanted to do. Some of my earliest influences were bands such as Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Kiss, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Rob Zombie, and many more Metal and Rock artists that I could list off that played a pivotal part in my interest in being a musician.
Brandon: I saw Poison in 2004, and their guitarist, CC DeVille, blew my mind. My grandpa always played guitar for me and my sister in his attic, which was one of my favorite things to do when visiting him. That got me into asking him to teach me guitar when I was 7. I wanted to play in the 5th-grade talent show, but they stopped doing it before I got the chance. Still, it sparked my love for playing music. My parents are big into metal and got me into bands like Slipknot, Metallica, and Pantera. Once I started watching YouTube videos and learning beyond what my Grandpa showed me, my skills started to take off. That’s when I knew I wanted to make the kind of music that I grew up listening to and playing.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
From Birth To Death is a heavy metal duo consisting of Devin John and Brandon Lee, out of Bay City, MI. Combining elements of heavy, thrash, and groove metal, they are able to bring an immense sound that captivates audiences across the metal scene.
Devin and Brandon were long acquainted with one another, and eventually discovered that they were both musicians who shared a passion for metal music. With Devin on drums and Brandon on guitar, the two formed From Birth To Death.
While being strictly a duo wasn’t what they initially envisioned, Devin’s ability to sing and play the drums simultaneously, combined with Brandon’s limitless capability on the guitar, the pair were able to accomplish a unique feat. While opening for well-known acts such as Soulfly, Powerman 5000, Saliva, Flotsam and Jetsam, Hammerfall, and other big names of the metal genre, despite only being a two-piece band, the duo succeed in bringing out a full sound and putting on exciting and energetic shows, showing that From Birth To Death was truly an extraordinarily talented act.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Our primary goal was to craft music that truly inspires us. Now that we’ve achieved this, we aim to revive the classic sounds of bands like Metallica and Pantera, infusing them with our unique styles. As independent artists, we’re determined to show that it’s possible to succeed in the music industry on your own terms. We hope to encourage other musicians to not only pick up an instrument and form a band but also to understand that with dedication and a solid plan, they can make their mark independently.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the freedom to express ourselves in our own unique way, coupled with the satisfaction of achieving the goals we’ve set for ourselves.
