We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Fritz Fayman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Fritz, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
This is a question that is always hard to answer. I do wish I had started making music earlier. I’m nervous that I’m getting too old and that I missed the best time to be on social media and take advantage of it when I was younger. Since I’m older a lot of my college friends and close friends are no longer on social media regularly, which makes total sense by the way. I wish I didn’t have to be on social media regularly. At the same time that I wish I could have started making earlier I know that I started when I started for a reason and there is no point dwelling on the past. You have no idea what could have been different. I could have lost interest during covid instead of it revitalizing my interest in music. I could have met less talented individuals that ended up forming our band. As much as you should study and learn from the past, you can’t let it control you. I’m happy with how much I’ve grown and although there is so much more to do, I know that I got where I needed to at the rate I was ready for.

Fritz, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I first got into music when I was in 8th grade and driving to school and then I heard Black Dog by Led Zeppelin on the radio. I had never heard anything like that and from there I wanted to learn how to play the guitar. The Reckless began during the hight of COVID in 2022. It started as a solo project and then grew as I met new people and reached out on different apps like vamps, and through work friends. The band went through many changes as members had to leave or quit due to going moving, changing jobs, or they just ended up not being a good fit. It took me about a year after our first show to find the core group that we are today. I’m thrilled with our members and how far we have come. We are playing bigger and bigger shows and our songs are getting better and better. We are always learning and developing our sound. I also believe we are one of the most fun bands in San Diego. We believe that if you go to a Reckless show you will come out in a great mood saying “wow that was a fun time”. We have a great performance that pulls the audience in with excellent musicianship and excellent showmanship. I’m proud of many things, including selling the 2nd most tickets in a packed SOMA show, being able to play a really good 3 hour set, and becoming a respected name in the scene. We are so excited to be releasing new music and doing what we love and Riku Myllykoski, John Kelly, and Michael Kennedy are awesome men and musicians and I’m lucky to know and play with them. Can’t wait to show everyone what comes next!

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
It’s honestly quite simple. Show up, like content and share. Showing up to shows is a given, it’s our favorite part as musicians and its fans favorite part as well. On top of that though making sure you like and share content is vital. In today’s era social media is king. Small things such as liking and sharing our videos or posts/commenting on them, feed the algorithm. This goes a long way in getting the content out to more people. Also creating playlists of your favorite local bands and sharing them with friends and family can give people an easy way to find new stuff to listen to.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Playing and performing live is my favorite part of playing music. The ability to play something with skill and precision and make it beautiful to someone who may not fully understand it, is an awesome feeling. Similar to when you are watching a sport and something amazing happens and you wonder how that’s even possible. I also get to do whatever I want on stage (within reason lol). As I always say to my band, the dumber you think you look on stage, the cooler the audience thinks you look. No one wants to be bored watching a show. Being an entertainer means letting go of social anxiety, I believe this let others let go of their social anxiety as well because if you look like you are carefree and having fun, the crowd will join you. I love to write songs and create badass riffs don’t get me wrong but playing live is the best.
