We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Frida Chavez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Frida , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first time I realized I wanted to pursue a creative career was during high school. Fashion ignited a deep passion within me—I would spend hours poring over magazines, captivated by the creative direction, models poses, and the stunning outfits. I was thrilled to be accepted into the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM), but financial constraints and a lack of family support meant I had to take a different path. I chose the safer route and studied psychology and Spanish. Yet, my creative spirit was unstoppable. Throughout university, I expressed my artistic side through a blog and a vintage and second-hand clothing online store that later turned into a handmade jewelry and illustration store. After graduation, I knew it was time to follow my true passion, so I dedicated two years to studying fashion design.
My journey through the fashion world has been transformative. Today, I am committed to helping women discover their unique styles and sharing the rich history of fashion. I strive to create valuable content for my followers and clients, inspiring them to embrace their individuality. Moreover, I am embarking on an exciting new venture with a partner. Our goal is to build a supportive community of women—a safe space where creativity thrives, mindfulness is encouraged, and fun and camaraderie are at the heart of everything we do.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Frida Chavez, born in San Diego, California, but raised in Tijuana, Baja California. I consider myself privileged to have grown up in both places. I am an incredibly creative person who loves to generate ideas and bring them to life, though I didn’t always realize this about myself. I’m only now embracing the idea of who I truly am. For a long time, I followed what was deemed “best” for me, what was right, and what could bring me more financial freedom without really asking myself what I needed or wanted. It took me a long time to shed the limiting beliefs that extinguished the spark within me the unique gift and ease with which I create.
Whenever I engaged in any form of art ( photography, illustration, creative direction, or video production) I felt effortless. I learned quickly, understood how things worked, and did my best to ensure all my projects thrived. I love to educate myself, read, and seek out information because I know it’s the way I learn best. I am a highly visual person who is excited by the idea that everything is within reach and there are always different ways to keep improving.
My main goal is to continue creating and supporting others in doing so. I aspire to be a guide and an example that anything we set our minds to can be achieved with effort, dedication, consistency, and a lot of love. For instance, on my Instagram account “Your Inner Style,” I strive to support, help, and guide women in finding their own style. Through “I Rather Be Here,” my business partner and I aim to create a safe space where women can express themselves creatively, have fun, meet others, and feel empowered.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I believe the most beautiful emotion I’ve ever experienced was when I decided to embrace the aspect of myself that made me special, creative, and unique. I think we are all creative—not just in the artistic sense, but as creators of our thoughts and the futures we aspire to shape. It’s a wonderful feeling when you connect with yourself and use creativity in a positive way. For me, it went beyond that, it was about discovering myself, admiring my strengths, and shining by simply being who I am.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I believe the only way to succeed on social media is by working on your ego and being your true self. Leave fears behind, show who you really are, and present your work with confidence, knowing that there will be someone out there who loves your content and wants to know more about you and your products or services. The key is to transform your life story and those defining moments into a way to connect with people on a more personal level. Nowadays, people want to feel understood and heard, and it’s crucial to make those kinds of connections so they understand why you do what you do.
