We were lucky to catch up with Freya Yeh recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Freya thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
My name is Freya. I’m a designer come from Taiwan. The biggest risk I’ve taken in my life is starting a brand new life here in the US myself. In 2019, I left everything behind just before Covid hit the world and decided to embark on my journey here in the States. I spent every cents I earned just to start studying grad school back then as a starting point. And now I’ve been working as designer in the creative industry in LA for almost three years. Life wasn’t easy to start over again here especially as an outsider of a country. But thankfully I met so many mentors and friends supporting me along the journey. The experience of living in a country that carries totally different culture background also shapes who I am and becomes the sparks in my art work.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Freya Yeh. I am a designer at Buck, which is a global creative company. Working in this creative industry, what we do is to help a brand to create and promote its unique voice through art and design. It could be a brand film, motion graphics, branding or illustration. I normally work with other amazing directors, artists to complete the mission. The best part of this job is that you can exploit your creativity to really make something better.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think the best part is that you get to let your creative juice to flow. We always strive to find a sweet spot, that unique angle to tell the story when we are working with clients. And you would find out the journey of working with different clients to create something together is wonderful. you get to see how arts would bring some difference to the market or to the world. I know for some people who is not working in the design or creative industry, design might be a difficult thing to understand. But I think design is a really intuitive thing. Just as if you would simply feel something by just staring at an art in a museum or just a board in a bus stop. Because of that, a good design would be an simple way to let people know a brand intuitive. And I think that’s the most fulfilling part to be as a designer in the industry. You help create something and make things better.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I think when I was still a student at school. I wish I would reach out to more industry people as many as I could. Whether it’s through LinkedIn or instagram. Experience from industry is the wisdom that you can never learn from textbook or online tutorials.
