We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Freeport Jackson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Freeport , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?

The first time I got a check from my craft felt like I won the lottery. I had no clue I even had a check coming, and it was from a song I recorded when I was at one of the lowest points in my life, I had literally forgot all about that song. It wasn’t much but it was enough to boost my motivation again and it made me realize that people actually do gravitate to my music and like it.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

First off thank you for allowing me to share my story again, and for those that don’t know my name is Freeport Jackson, a female recording artist, producer, and audio engineer. I originally came up with this name living in Houston, Tx almost 10 years ago. I was in looking for something fun and creative to be called as I continued my artistic journey and I’ve been Freeport Jackson ever since.

I’m originally from Atlanta, Ga so I think music is just in my DNA because the South has always had something to say, so it wasn’t a question if I was going to do music or not. I didn’t start taking it serious until I moved to Houston and decided to enroll in audio engineering courses. I’ve been on a roll ever since.

As of 2023 I’m most proud of how my consistent hard work is finally paying off. Last year around this time my music only had a total of about 10k streams but now I have over 250k streams and 30k of those came from my newest album, released July 23 titled Ride: Tha Album(on all platforms right now) which is quite an accomplishment for me considering I’m not into all that social media video making stuff. I’m more into the creating process, the writing, the mixing. And I think what sets me apart from others is my love and passion for what I do. I’m not out here chasing likes and views, I just want people to listen and enjoy. I take what I do serious but I also have fun while doing it. Long as your having fun doing something you love, trust me them dollars start off small but them checks start getting a little bigger over time without you even realizing it.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

The most rewarding aspect of being an artist, specifically an independent artist is the creative control. I’m in charge of all my lyrics, the beats I make, and the producers I use. I have also met some cool people doing the same thing as me on a global level (Wiz Capell, Iconic Neoh, Giga Bytes, and many more) thanks to social media and a love for music. I feel like being an independent artist allows you to step outside the box and create your own sound.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?

I don’t have a huge presence on social media right now but I can say it’s growing. The small audience I do have I try to interact with them often and also I try to support what they may have going on. One thing people have to understand about gaining the support of others is that you have to be supportive as well. You can’t expect people to share your work or like your work if you never share theirs. So when I see someone selling a product I try to buy it or atleast share it and same goes for music. I’ll listen to it first and if I like it I have no problem sharing it and even letting people know it’s hot. Supporting others is not going to stop you from shinning. And I love supporting the underdogs, the major artist already get mad love, it’s time to support the indie and underground people that are really out here hustling hard!
