We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Free Gems Network a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Free Gems , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
Knowing everything we know today, we feel that if we could start over we would take a step back and come up with a plan that was more manageable. In the beginning of our journey we would drop two episodes a week. One on Tuesday and one on Thursday. In the beginning we were just looking at it as fun and putting the work in to out work our competitors. That’s cool until life happens and things change and you have to learn to adjust and keep the party going.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Free Gems Network is podcast show based in Columbus, Ga. It is hosted by Ej, Willmatic, and Gumbosa. This show highlights different entrepreneurs/artist and allow them a safe space to tell their story and drop gems that they picked up along their journey in their respected industry. With over 70+ episodes we have highlighted musicians, painters, models, radio personalities, photographers, marketing professionals, other podcasters etc. The thing that sets us apart from other shows is that we never allow the spotlight to be about us. When a guest is on our show we tell them that this moment is about them. What we are most proud of is that we are given a opportunity to showcase and shine the spotlight on someone else other than ourselves. We are able to have a front row seat into somebody else’s life story.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
We were wrapping up season 4, and the third member Gumbosa was getting ready to move to another city. With him moving we knew that we had to adapt. We always called ourself a network from the very beginning. So with the change we created two new shows. One show is titled Til the cup is empty. This show is a interview based show where Gumbosa steps from behind the camera and is the host. The second show we created is titled The Rap Sessions. This show is a where we showcase real life conversations about family, relationships/marriage, and navigating through modern life. Creating these shows had showed us that we are much more than what we started out as and made us have to pivot so we can keep going.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What helped Free Gems build our reputation is creating a safe space for entrepreneurs to tell their stories. Often times as creatives we tend to feel like we are alone and don’t have anyone to look to for inspiration or even advice. Through storytelling Free Gems provides that.
