Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Free Chains. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Free, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I believe that my most meaningful project that I have released was my first album that was released titled Dreams. This is my life mission put into an album. All of my goals, the desires I have, the current situation or starting point I have, my fears of failure, and what’s truly pushing me to keep going all throughout a story of believing in what you have. Seeing how this was the first album I truly prepared a rollout for (in spite of it not going completely to plan) I believe that I truly allowed myself to go out of my box while pushing my creative ability forward.
Free, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My first rap that I ever made was made in 4th grade and was performed in an elementary school cafeteria. I almost separated from the art of making music because the annual 6th grade talent show got cancelled due to a low amount of performers. However, one day I was in middle school and a friend brought up how I used to rap. So later on, I found myself in this rap battle that a couple kids thrown me into. Although I won with some lyrics that weren’t really that good, it encouraged me to come back to music and I haven’t stopped ever since.
My biggest inspirations that influence my rap style are Eminem, J Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, and Meek Mill. I consider myself to be Em’s rhyme schemes, Wayne’s Punchlines, Meek Mill’s hunger, Cole’s passion, and Kendrick’s poetic way with words all combined into one person. It may be a bold statement but that’s what I believe I give off.
My main mission as an artist is to encourage and show to everyone that the only limitation that is stopping them from becoming whatever they want to be is themselves. It is not the circumstances, the world, the economy, the market, what others may say, etc. It is truly the mindset that you have on what you are capable of doing.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I actually can. It was summer of 2022. I was getting ready to release a song and someone who claimed to be from HipHopDX hit me up for an article. Long story short, it was a scam. This left me with a shorter budget than what I was already working with. So afterwards, I hit up the person who was actually affiliated with HipHopDx and they were willing to do some promotion with me for my song. It would cost a portion of my budget tho. I thought for a minute about what to do. Should I scramble to get whatever I can and accept what was loss or go for it with this journalist? I decided to pay the amount that the journalist was asking and that led to my first song getting over 1k streams.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The best they can do is show support for artists they do like and stop paying attention to artists they don’t like. If we truly wanted to break a new artist into the mold and give them the spotlight that we feel they deserve, I truly believe that there are too many tools out there to help us do that.
