We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Frederick Hines. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Frederick below.
Frederick, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
When I was in high school, I was in a performing arts club called “Brothers and Sisters United” it included acting, dancing, and singing. I would say that brought out my more artistic side. Upon my senior year I became the choreographer for the dance group. It’s kind of funny now thinking back. I love to dance, I thought I was going to be the next Chris brown. But, you never know what life has in store, I put down the beats and picked up a sewing machine and never looked back.
I feel as though I have to always be creative or creating things. I can not just sit and be a witness to others creations. I have to show what’s in my mind. Express it!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Frederick Hines. I start going by Hollywood Hines a couple years ago because I was over people making fake profiles with my government name. I go by “Hollywood” because I love all things creative. Also, a lot of my friends and family call me Hollywood so I just figured I’d run with it. I’ve also been a fashion guru, something that made me a fashion guru was always going shopping and not being able to find the clothes I like. So that’s when I began to customize my own back in 2014. Never did I imagine it would unfold almost 10 years later and become “Hollywood Denim.” The road isn’t easy for everyone. I’ve encountered many obstacles along the way, but no matter the weather. I never gave up.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
A sense of purpose. Everyone has a dream. The difference is some have the dream and some chase the dream. Everyone is on this planet and we all would love to leave a mark. My goal driving this creativity journey is the satisfaction at the end of it all. I have no creative agency behind me, so this has always been just me and my own talents doing. Everyday I can feel myself conquering obstacles and getting closer to my dream. That’s what keeps you hungry.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
It’s okay to take time to reset and think. I think a lot of creatives we get so focused on our dream that sometimes we get out of tune with our mental and physical health. Sometimes I would work so hard and not realized I’ve been up for days and should rest. Those times that I take to replenish my thoughts and body are some of the best times I come up with the best ideas.
