We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Frederick Durham. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Frederick below.
Frederick, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about how you got your first non-friend, non-family client. Paint the picture for us so we can feel the same excitement you felt on that day.
I gained my first client by doing cold calls and emails. I would look up small local businesses in my area and look at their website and see if there was anything I could possibly do to help attract clientele to their business. I would reach out and try to email whoever was in charge at that point in time and offer my services to them free of charge. Until one day I had a small business reach out and ask me to help build up their online presence they mentioned that they had seen some previous work that I had done and was very impressed by it and wanted to work with me.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Frederick “Fredo” Durham. I am a 2x award winning, free-lance photographer from the westside of Indianapolis, Indiana. I consider myself a fine arts-photographer, often showcasing my photography in galleries and different exhibitions. In 2017, I graduated from Pike High School. Soon after, I completed courses at Vincennes University and Ivy Tech in Web Design and Photography.
My love for photography started a very young age I can remember when I got my first digital camera for Christmas when I was younger. As I grew older my interest for photography had gotten pushed to the side not in a bad way I just discovered other things and interest. I eventually came back to the photography world while attending college at Vincennes University when I suddenly decided to change my major from web design to photography. There is where
I truly began to see my art develop while in the darkroom. Thats when it dawned on me that I really had a true vision and talent as an artist. This was a gift I felt needed to be shared with the world. I have been blessed to provide photography services to: friends, professional spaces, and many homes. My most proud moment in my career still till this day is when I won Emerging Artist Of The Year in 2021.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
In my opinion the most effective strategy for growing your clientele is staying consistent and constantly putting your work in your audience face whether they like it or not. I say that because starting off no one will pay attention to you there will be few that will truly support you at the beginning. Once you keep showing your work people will start to begin notice your progress and when you hit a certain point the flood gates will open and clientele will come naturally because a good product or service will just naturally sell itself.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
In my opinion what I think helped me build my reputation was truly just word of mouth people telling their family and friends about my work and exhibitions. Also another reason that really helped me build up my reputation is when I first started doing showings in galleries my very first piece that I had ever displayed in a gallery had sold in the first two hours of the show and from that point on I continued to stay consistent in that space and that’s what helped me build up my reputation within my market.
