We were lucky to catch up with Freddy Mac recently and have shared our conversation below.
Freddy , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Earning a full time living doing something that you love is not easy. It takes determination and extremely hard work! I’m one of those people that have known what I wanted to do. Getting here was no easy feat. I’ve worked hard to achieve what I have so far. My journey started in 2012 as an intern as K92-WXLK in Roanoke, VA. Over the next 8 years, I would work my way up in many different capacities, from part-time to full time on-air staff. The only way I can describe those years of being at the part-time level, when I wanted to be more- perseverance. I did little things to remain top of mind for the bosses, so that when an opportunity opened up, I was already there. In 2020, which was a weird year for everyone, I took a chance at applying to my dream job at Q102 in Cincinnati, doing the afternoon show with my 2 cohosts. Believe it or not, I’m more of the straight-laced one on the show, which I find to be ironic, given how I got in so much trouble as a kid. In addition to be on the air, I DJ weddings and other events, as well as some voiceover work. All things I’m passionate about that allow me to create a fun and enjoyable experience for others.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hey! My name is Freddy Mac. I’m 1/3 of the afternoon show on Q102-Cincinnati from 3-7pm- The Roy, Nat, and Freddy Mac show! Landing a job at the heritage station, Q102 in Cincinnati, is a dream come true for me! As a kid, I grew up listening to the radio, and always thought, “Wow! They sound like they’re having so much fun! They’re also so fun. I want to do that one day!” I was also the kid that was known as the “class clown”. Always talking and cracking jokes in class, and was never allowed to have my desk as apart of the group. Throughout elementary school, my desk was permanently next to the teacher’s desk to prevent me from talking in class- it didn’t really work. But I’ve always loved being silly, and making people laugh.
All of that to say, I’m one of those people that have known what I wanted to do. Getting here was no easy feat. I’ve worked hard to achieve what I have so far. My journey started in 2012 as an intern as K92-WXLK in Roanoke, VA. Over the next 8 years, I would work my way up in many different capacities, from part-time to full time on-air staff. What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is meeting listeners of my radio show that tell me how we made them laugh when they were going through a tough time in their life, and we helped them through it. You never know who’s watching (or listening), so it’s always important to give your best. Whatever your field, give it 110% everyday. You never know who you might be blessed by the work that you put out into the world.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
One of my main goals is to help people. Whether it’s helping get people through the drive home in the afternoons, after a long day at work, or through my work in the my local community- raising funds for a local non-profit, or volunteering my time with any number of charitable organizations. Helping others is the goal. I don’t believe we were given our gifts/talents, only to help us pursue something. I firmly believe that it is to be of service to others. My other lofty, longterm goal is to be in the Radio Hall of Fame. I’m figuring this one out, but a guy can dream, right?
