We recently connected with Freddie Sanders and have shared our conversation below.
Freddie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
I gained my first client by consistently sharing my passion for makeup on Instagram Live. Every Wednesday, I would go live to demonstrate different makeup looks while explaining my techniques and answering viewer questions. It was a way to express myself creatively and build engagement with my audience. One day, a viewer requested that I do someone else’s makeup live—and I did. That experience opened the door to my first client and sparked the start of my professional journey.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Freddie Sarai Sanders, and I’m a 22-year-old makeup artist based in Phoenix, Arizona. I’m the owner of GlammedBySarai, where I specialize in Soft Glam looks—though I’m experienced in a variety of styles. I began my journey in makeup at 18, but starting out was challenging due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To stay connected to the beauty world, I launched a lip gloss line called Glossy Girls, which helped me establish a presence in the beauty community.
Being very family-oriented, I was raised to embrace my skin tone and culture with pride. That value inspired me to focus on mastering makeup for Black women—creating a space where we can feel seen, celebrated, and beautiful in an industry that hasn’t always made room for us.

Do you have multiple revenue streams – if so, can you talk to us about those streams and how your developed them?
In addition to my makeup services, my business generates supplementary revenue through the sale of touch-up kits and other small beauty essentials. I offer these items to clients during appointments so they can maintain a fresh, polished look throughout the day. This not only enhances the client experience but also reinforces the lasting quality of my work.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I funded the initial capital for my business by working and saving diligently. I held a 9-to-5 position at a beauty supply store, where I also served as their live social media influencer. This role not only helped me build savings, but it also gave me valuable experience in beauty marketing and audience engagement—skills that I now apply to my own brand.
