Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Frans Stiene. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Frans, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
One of my defining moments in my life was when I made a very conscious choice to start to heal myself. I suffered from chronic back problems since I was 16 years old, at the age of 30 it was worse then ever and I felt physically and emotionally lost. I still remember that moment, it was so powerful to make a very clear decision to start healing myself.
Frans, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am was born in the Netherlands, did a backpack trip to Australia for a year when I was 22 years old and lived in India for 2 years when I was 30 years old. After India I moved to Australia where me and my ex-partner had a retreat centre for many years. These days I reside in the Netherlands again.
Traveling is in my blood…
This is why I love traveling for my work, in fact I don’t even see it as work as it is so rewarding and fulfilling.
I have been teaching the system of Reiki for more than 25 years now, world wide. The system of Reiki is a healing modality from Japan which consist of meditation practices, mantras/symbols, precepts, chanting, hands on healing etc… Through these practices you start to slowly let go of your anger and worry, so that you can be more grateful in your life and this in turn helps you to be more true to your way and your being. All of this leads to one very important element, compassion and kindness for yourself and others.
Besides traveling and teaching the system of Reiki all over the world, I love to write. First I co-wrote a few books with my ex wife about the system of Reiki and in the last few years I have published my own books: The Inner Heart of Reiki, Reiki Insights, and my latest book is The Way of Reiki – The Inner Teachings of Mikao Usui.
What I find fascinating is that through traveling, writing and teaching I get to touch many peoples hearts and see them blossoming into a more compassionate and kinder person. A wonderful ripple effect starts to take place through this. Because they go out into the world as well creating more and more ripples of love and kindness which is so needed in our current world.
Since 2012 I am studying with a Japanese priest, Takeda Ajari, in a small monastery in the mountains of Japan. I am very fortunate to be accepted by this amazing teacher and through his teachings my own personal teachings have changed in many ways.
In fact I have been very lucky to have met and worked with amazing teachers, one of my first teachers was Li Ying, a Taoist master from China, I trained with her for over 12 years until she passed away. It is through her direct teaching style that I really started to see the deeper elements of healing.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
During my training in Japan you go into the mountains and practice very difficult practices. For example, they hang you by your feet over a cliff, when you hang there you have to confess your sins, that way you make yourself lighter. At the same time you have to have complete trust in the two people holding your legs. There are also practices in which you stand under ice cold waterfalls, work with fire and walk over the fire. These practices have helped me enormously to become more resilience in my daily life and work. During these trainings you also have to chant mantras for many hours on end, so you have to show perseverance and dig deep inside yourself to be able to do these difficult task. But they help you in your daily life, as we all know our daily life is not always so easy and therefore we need to have a kind of practice in which we can find this support and resilience.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
To really succeed in my field you have to make sure you embody what you teach. There are many teachers out there but a lot of them just know how to speak about it and do not have the embodiment of what they are speaking about. This creates an unstable foundation for themselves and also for their students. Therefore one of the core elements within being a great teacher is making sure that you start to walk your talk, embody what you are teaching, not just in your classes but also in your daily life. Plus as a teacher we still have to make sure we have our own teacher, having your own teacher is essential for being a teacher. A teacher will help you to stay on track, guide you through your own work and direct embodiment of it.
