Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Franky Nines. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Franky, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I knew I wanted to pursue a creative and artistic path professionally after stacking a ton of boxes in a shipping truck, doing back-office clock-in work, sweeping floors, and flipping burgers. I was like, “Yo! I love drawing, I love art, and I love design. I think I can make money with this.” I already knew how to take apart websites, and with Photoshop in hand – which I used for street art and graffiti – designing logos kind of came naturally. I didn’t even know what “graphic design” was until after high school. Reading a few books, I learned, “Oh, graffiti is kind of like logo design,” and people will pay you for it. So, I started making business cards and logos for small businesses around my town. Doing this, I ventured into print design without fully knowing what I was getting into. It didn’t dawn on me that I might need formal education for it until I walked into a design agency and was like, “Hey, can I work here?” and they replied, “No, you don’t have a degree. You need to go to college.” So I thought, “OK… I’m a high school dropout, but let’s do this college thing.” Next thing I knew, I was in San Francisco attending the Art Institute. That’s where I learned the ins and outs of designing and development, and how to build a professional foundation to earn a living in Silicon Valley. Bam! This journey led me to developing apps and working for big names, like Zynga, during the web2 boom. I started designing and developing mobile applications, collaborating with major brands, entertainers, rappers – doing all kinds of wild stuff. I even broke the top charts of the App Store in 2011.
Franky, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m FrankyNines. Based in Los Angeles but from the Bay Area, I’m an artist and technical entrepreneur. Since 2006, I’ve been working professionally in web design, development, gaming, and interactive media. I’ve worked with a ton of companies and have fine-tuned my craft, so I can make art and enjoy the things in life I’m passionate about. Coming from the gaming industry and pivoting to entrepreneurship, I jumped into Blockchain and Web3 in 2017. I moved to the UK for a year, working on crypto wallet and identity applications during the ICO Boom. That’s when I first saw Dapperlabs, the company behind CryptoKitties, which I reached out and landed a job with. Worked with them for 2 years. That phase ignited a fire in me for Web3 and Blockchain, and I’ve been in the WEB3 industry ever since. Post-Dapper, I got my footing solid in the Web3 crypto community. Diving deep into tokenomics, finance, and governance, leveraging tech to push boundaries of… this has evolved me from an art philosopher to tech academic in a very short period of time.
That evolution? It pushed me to start my own company: an organization and NFT collection; SupDucks by MegaVolt Corp. That’s what I’m running today. It’s all about my art, my ideas, and the vibes I bring to the world. Plus, I’m mentoring and setting a foundation for young entrepreneurs and artists under me. I like to inspire and educate, pass down my knowledge, but also do good design work as well.
Because of all this, I’ve found myself as a speaker and judge for tech web3 ETHEREUM hackathon events.
Im looking to continue building connections, investing and providing my expertise and experience in Web/Tech/Gaming/ and Art.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
“NFTs CHANGED MY LIFE!!! -2023 RIP” hahah JK.
I love the concept of non-fungible tokens. I think it is a brilliant way of locking it in originality and validity of a digital asset or object. When you say NFT people think of either a image, or they think of a PFP of a monkey or a duck. But in a NFTs are so much more. There’s been a huge booming rise in this Web3 technology that has opened up a lot of opportunities for artists and creators in Web3, entrepreneurs to be able to build businesses and communities online using Blockchain. The NFT as a type of object in this infrastructure system, this has open a lot of doors for many people. When we break it down, it’s really about the concept of digital ownership. Whether that be an image or a piece of meta-data or a chunk of script that has hosted on IPFS. Possibilities of this new format, is unlimited and it’s really exciting to see what creativity has been able to inspire from other people in this industry.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I think for me, it’s just trying to make the biggest impact that I can while I’m on this planet. When you look at the historical figures in art and invention, whether that be Leonardo da Vinci or Michelangelo or even great brains influences like Nikola Tesla or Thomas Edison I think my time here is to try to make as much impact as possible. Love the idea of carving in stone my name so that way it will be dugged up in 100 years and people will say, dang remember that guy that was named Franky Nines. A Latino kid from the high desert who grew up in the Bay Area, went to college worked in the web industry, lived in LA connected a lot of people built some really impactful things, and made some great art. Rode his bicycle through skid row with his shoes un-tied and his motorcycle through the woods in the deserts of California, Nevada, Utah, and traveled the world into Europe and South America, learning from different cultures and art and working in technology. This guy was bananas!
