We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Franky Fade a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Franky, thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
A huge risk that I took that was most important for my future and development, was quitting my full-time job in my early 20’s so that I could have more time to pursue a “career” as a songwriter/record producer. This was a big risk in multiple ways. I was risking being kicked out of my parents house because I was doing something unfavorable and seemingly unproductive to most people. I was trying to create a living in a space that is unpredictable, and probably 90% of people who try at it make very little to money at all, even over the course of many years. Despite all of this risk, my choice would eventually shape me into a well experienced, and competent entrepreneur with many skills who’s good at thinking on his feet to create and attract opportunities that keep lights on, and to retain a strong network of competent individuals in the same field, and beyond.
Franky, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Many people who follow my social media may only know me as the guy who creates funny skits that showcase how much of our “popular” music culture is recycled and presented back to us for our re-consumption. But my start came from co-producing and writing an album in 2012 with “Nylo” which was singed by LA Reid at Epic Records. That is truly what put me on the path to all of my current endeavors. I operate under the pseudonym “Franky Fade” as an entrepreneur in the field of writing music, and being open to all contemporary opportunities related to the uses of music and copyrights. All of the great relationships I’ve acquired being in music business has moved me to evolve into ALSO being a consultant for independent artists, providing creative direction of projects, and mix engineering of musical works. My ambition for this variety comes from my mentors who’ve shown me that there is much more that you can use your gifts for in order to make income. I’ve made very good money in very interesting ways, all r consistent with the use of music copyrights, and my abilities related to the field of music entertainment.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built a social media presence by finally arriving to the understanding and accepting that your presence, more than likely, won’t be established in the way you initially projected. At least not in a time frame that you may have projected. For example; someone who lives to be a successful singer is out there every day, showing their talent by booking all the talent shows, posting multiple videos online of themselves performing, and really going for it that way. But years and years go by, and they never catch a break or nothing substantial comes out of their persistence, no matter how great they sound. One day that person hears (word-of-mouth) about an opportunity to voice over a singing character in a Disney film. He/she lands the role, the movie comes out, and that song wins best vocal performance in an animated film at the Oscars, and now that singers voice is most sought after in the movie/film industry and beyond, and maybe even landed a major record deal.
You can’t expect that your recognition will come in one way, even though it’s probably the most glamorous way. You gotta be open to taking different avenues to make it to that end goal, and trust that process that you start seeing actual results from.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The mission now is to continue to release art without fear of unfavorable judgment of it. It just hinders your growth to hesitate and or decide not to expose what you created, because you assume the public may not love it, even though you yourself enjoy it.
