Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Frankie Gomez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Frankie, thanks for joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Yes, I’ve been able to earn a full-time living from my creative work, but it definitely wasn’t like that from day one! I started my business while I was still in college. Back then, I was learning everything I could from YouTube and investing in courses created by other creatives. College was the least of my concerns—during those days, I spent most of my time building my business and just wanted to get a degree so I could keep building. It was a lot of trial and error, but that’s how I built my foundation.
At first, I was photographing friends and family for free. It was all about building my portfolio and getting experience. Gradually, I started to build a business here in New Mexico. Now, we serve clients all over the state and even attract people from outside who are drawn to our unique Southwest style.
The whole process has been a real evolution, both creatively and professionally. Every aspect of the business has grown and changed over time. One of the biggest game-changers was getting plugged into the local community and catching the eye of various publications. That really helped launch Suroeste to where it is today.
Looking back, I’m not sure I could have sped up the process much. Each step was a learning experience that shaped who I am as a photographer and business owner. But if I had to give advice to my younger self, I’d say: network more, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, and always be open to learning and evolving your craft.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello! I’m Frankie Gomez, the owner and lead photographer at Suroeste Studios. My journey into photography began during my college years, where I found myself more passionate about capturing moments through my lens than focusing on my studies. What started as a hobby quickly evolved into a burning desire to turn my passion into a profession.
Suroeste Studios is a photography business deeply rooted in the heart of New Mexico. We specialize in capturing the essence of the Southwest through our unique style of photography. Our services range from wedding photography to commercial shoots, family portraits, and even editorial work for various publications.
What sets us apart is our ability to blend the raw, rugged beauty of the Southwest with modern, stylish photography techniques. We don’t just take pictures; we tell stories. Each photo we capture is infused with the spirit of New Mexico – the warm earth tones, the dramatic landscapes, and the rich cultural heritage that makes our state so special.
One of the main problems we solve for our clients is helping them preserve their most precious moments in a way that’s both beautiful and authentic. Whether it’s a couple’s wedding day or a brand looking to showcase their products in a unique light, we strive to create images that not only meet but exceed our clients’ expectations.
I’m most proud of how Suroeste Studios has grown from a one-person operation to a recognized name in New Mexico’s photography scene. We’ve been featured in several local and national publications, which has been incredibly validating and has helped us reach an even wider audience.
What I want potential clients and followers to know is that at Suroeste Studios, we’re not just about taking pretty pictures. We’re about creating an experience. We pour our heart and soul into every shoot, ensuring that each client feels comfortable, valued, and heard. Our goal is to not just meet the brief, but to create something that truly resonates with our clients and captures the essence of who they are.
Lastly, I want people to know that we’re constantly evolving and pushing ourselves creatively. The Southwest is our muse, but we’re always looking for new ways to showcase its beauty and the stories of the people who call it home. When you work with Suroeste Studios, you’re not just getting a photographer – you’re getting a passionate storyteller who’s dedicated to bringing your vision to life.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Best source of new clients for me: Word-of-mouth referrals have been invaluable. Satisfied clients often recommend our services to friends and family, which has been a steady source of new business. Additionally, our social media presence, particularly on Instagram, has attracted many clients who resonate with our unique Southwest style. We have attracted clients from Brooklyn to Los Angeles who travel to New Mexico for our unique style.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most fulfilling aspect of my work is the art of creating elegant, moody, and editorial imagery from fleeting moments. I love transforming ordinary instants into extraordinary visual narratives. It’s not just about capturing a scene; it’s about crafting a story through a lens, imbuing each frame with emotion and depth. This passion for elevating everyday moments into timeless, artistic expressions is what truly drives me as a photographer.
