We were lucky to catch up with Frank Jackson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Frank , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
So July 14th 2020 my grandfather passed away a few weeks after I just got back from a deployment and my leave was denied to go back home for the funeral due to covid. I wanted to honor my grandfather and have our name live on for generations to come and so I came up with the name Frank Fourth because I’m the fourth and my grandfather is the second. So it’s a way for my grandfather, my dad, and my name to live on for generations.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Well my name is Frank T Jackson IV. I’m from Memphis, Tennessee born and raised. I joined the military after high school in 2018 and got stationed in San Diego, California in 2019 and have been here since. I started my brand Frank Fourth Clothing in 2020 and since I never had the time to fully dedicate time to it due to deployments and not being home to put my all into. Recently I’ve separated from the military and I’m in barber school chasing all my dreams. I say all that to say that Frank Fourth is more than just the clothing it’s a brand to show people to take that step forward and chase your dreams. I’m building my clothing brand, chasing my barber dreams, as well as my music career with DJ’n and producing. With my brand I want to show you can build generational wealth off doing what you love to do. My brand is a brand that’ll help you get out a slump and get up and get to it no matter what point of life your in right now.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I remember I had a design made for a jean jacket I was so excited about it. I was just starting out got my first business credit card and used it to get the jacket made me not knowing much back then I just got a bulk order and didn’t get a sample first. So I’m talking with the manufacturer back and forward trying get updates and they were beating around the bush then more time went by and they posted my jean jacket on their instagram story I was excited again thinking I’m finally about to get my product. Once again they weren’t replying giving me false information on what was going on and never received anything from them but I didn’t let that stop me at all. I could’ve took that lost and gave up completely on my brand but I didn’t I went back to the drawing board and got back to it. In this game you can’t expect everything to go right you have to learn to take a few losses along the way to the top.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
When it comes to manufacturing I go a lot of different ways about it. I started with getting t-shirts made at a local t-shirt shop. I later found out about finding manufacturers and working with them. With me being away all the time though I’d drop a shirt and disappear for a month or two sometimes longer due to me being in the military at the time. So I came up with a new plan to order blanks and make my clothing myself with heat transfers. So I’d make my sample myself and I’d let my customers know that each order was made to order. So someone would order a shirt I’d get the blank and press it up and ship it out instead of being stuck with a bunch of products. Now that I’m out the military I order samples and promote the sample to see if my customers like it and do pre-orders or do a small bulk order and see how they sale. This usually comes with not restocking once I’m sold out I’m out.
