Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Francisco Amaya. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Francisco, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later?
Absolutely before. I wished I never had to wait to rediscover my passion. A poignant tale of an immigrant wanting to be a photographer but thwarted by the complexities of their status. In the heart of the American Dream, there exist a narrative about the DACA recipient. We were kids taken across borders following their parents. We don’t know our native country and feel unwanted in this one. Having that fear of deportation that could come at any moment restricted me of following my passion, that and the complexities of life demands to make ends meet we all face. Yet, within my heart, the flame of creativity flickers, refusing to be extinguish by the shadows of adversity. I wished I picked up a camera sooner, for now it is a symbol of hope and defiance against the limitations imposed by the system. To prove that dreams can transcend borders, and art has the capability to break down barriers. creating a visual testament to the resilience of the human spirit. We are Dreamers.

Francisco, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Francisco Amaya, an aspiring portrait and wedding photographer. As an introverted person, photography entered my life as a form of solace during those uncertain times. I found a camera to be my sanctuary, a means to express my emotions and connect with the world in a way words couldn’t. I strive to create a safe and welcoming space for my clients, capturing their love and connection authentically, a genuine laughter, the stolen glances. Weddings for me are a celebration of diversity, and I find immense joy in documenting the unique stories of each couple. It’s a privilege to be entrusted with capturing the beginning of their new chapter. As a DACA recipient, I want to inspire others facing similar challenges to pursue their dreams fearlessly. Through my lens, I hope to showcase the beauty that emerges when we embrace diversity and the strength that comes from overcoming adversity.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Certainly. my goal is to capture weddings not just as events but as reflections of the unique stories and journeys. I want every photograph to serve as a testament to the richness of human connection and the power of love to transcend any boundaries. My experiences navigating the complexities of immigration have shape a deep sense of resilience and a desire to contribute positively to the narrative surrounding DACA recipients.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One significant lesson I had to unlearn as a DACA recipient who is finally trying to turn into a photographer full time, was the internalized belief that my immigration status defined the limits of my aspirations. Growing up in an environment where uncertainties about my future were ever present, I initially struggled with self-doubt and questioned whether pursuing a creative career was a realistic endeavor. Over time, I realized that my status did not diminish my ability to dream. Embracing my identity became a source of strength rather than intimidation. Finally picking up a camera allowed me to break through the mental barriers that I had unknowingly imposed on myself. It became a powerful tool to express my voice.
