We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Francess Kpaka. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Francess below.
Francess , appreciate you joining us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I started my business because I’ve always wanted to be a business owner especially being a black women it’s important to have diversity in the business world so that you can also be someone that people can relate to and they might be encouraged to start their own business. I love makeup and I tried becoming a makeup artist but I still have a lot to learn with different techniques and skin types so that’ll be able to give my best to my future clients so I’ll hold off on that. So then I thought what if I sell hair and I started investing in my hair brand Jaybeauty but I started working with my friend and she would create the wigs. It didn’t work out and but it also taught me that even with friends you need a written agreement just to make sure there is no future problems. So I don’t have anyone to make my wigs so I decided it’ll be easier to just sell bundles and frontals and slowing teach myself how to create wigs in the meantime. To be honest I should’ve waited till I got the correct packaging for my brand before I started my actual business but now I found great packaging that’ll suit my brand and hopefully it goes up from here.

Francess , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have a beauty brand called Jay Beauty and at the moment I sell bundles and frontals but in the future I want to also sell makeup products and quality wigs. I plan on expanding my brand with a range of products from bonnets, brushes, hair ties and more hair accessories. Jay beauty provides 100% human hair bundles which come in a straight jet black style and the length is 22inch. Our frontals are also 100% jet black human hair with the length of 18inch and it’s a HD lace for the most natural look. More styles and colors will come in as I grow. I just recently sent Pr packages in hopes to garner more exposure and customers which I’m very proud of the packaging of those pr packages I sent out and I’ve gotten positive feedback of the look of them. I started Jay beauty a year ago and I’m excited to see where it goes from here and it make me happy to see people wearing my products and enjoying the results. I want to provide more quality with all my products so that my customers will have the best experience with Jay beauty. Dedication is crucial for a successful business and as a small business owner I know how important consistency is when it comes to growing your business, brand, name and clientele. Time management is also important when running a business so it’s important for me to balance uni, modeling and my beauty brand so that I’m not overwhelmed.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I started my business I wanted to send my first or package to four girls thag I thought would help my brand gain more exposure and I sent the packages but I was told they were lost and not delivered to any of the girls I wanted to receive them. I was upset and discouraged because I wanted this to work and see the girls with my hair but that unfortunately didn’t happen. I lost motivation and basically stopped promoting my brand and take a step back. All my efforts were lost and I was disappointed of the outcome. After I separated from my business partner/friend it took me some time to regain motivation to start my brand back up again. I just came to a realization that I’m sitting on a mountain of product and a potentially successful business. So that really made me snap out of it and really focus of building my brand again. That really taught me that things happen and not always the way you want it but it doesn’t mean you should quit.
