We recently connected with Francesca Plumly and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Francesca, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I’m Francesca Plumly, self-published children’s book author. Having published my first book “Who Lives on Blooper Lane?” at the end of 2024 was truly the most meaningful work I’ve ever produced. I’ve always dreamt of creating something tangible… Something you could touch, clutch to your chest, and proudly display. And with a knack for writing since I was little, authoring my own book was always something I’d strived for.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As a children’s book author and toddler mom (plus with one on the way), I understand the importance of making learning entertaining. If your child is entertained, they’re more likely to go back to that habit, that book, that toy — and the goal of my book “Who Lives on Blooper Lane?” is to create cognitive recall through an alphabet-led journey down Blooper Lane. Think, suburban living for animals. In my book, you can find how an eel, a cow, a loris, and even a mink would take on their day from their homes on Blooper Lane.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Through the process of self-publishing my book, I had to learn. The process doesn’t just end once you write the manuscript. Creating your mood board, sourcing and managing your illustrator, learning the parameters of publishing platforms, printing specs, creating a narrative to categorize your book. It all rolls up into something I’m truly proud of – The reward of endurance. From pen to paper, the fact that an idea can become a tangible reality now sitting on my toddler’s bookshelf. Now, that’s the most reward aspect of being an artist.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
“Always be kind to your neighbors — The quirky ones, the furry ones, the teeny ones, and everyone in between.” This is the leading text upon opening my book “Who Lives on Blooper Lane?” Through this book and its expansion I envision, my mission is to use this platform to encourage kindness. The type of bring-your-sick-neighbor-soup kindness. When kids can tactically learn the power of kindness, and even see it visualized through their favorite animals, I believe they’re made to better understand just how important it is to be a good neighbor.
