We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Francesca Perini a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Francesca thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with a fun one – what’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?

Working in social media, we need to have a very flexible schedule when it comes to the management of the accounts, client communications, last-minute requests, etc. We want to be understanding of our clients, most of whom are small local businesses, while also paying attention to our own needs not just as professionals, but also as normal human beings.

I truly believe that the core of a successful relationship with one’s job is a healthy work-life balance, and it is extremely important that we as professionals take time to build that balance. What do I mean by “building?” Setting boundaries for client communication and keeping them in place, creating a feasible schedule for physical and mental health and sticking to it, taking days off work and feeling like you truly deserve them. We are the creators of that balance and we need to hold ourselves accountable for it.

It is imperative that we run our businesses with that in mind and, most importantly, lead by example for our employees. How can you expect our staff to create their own work-life balance if you send company-wide emails / messages at midnight? The “first to arrive, last to leave” mentality that runs the corporate world is so obsolete and needs to be immediately replaced. Let’s value efficiency instead.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

When I started my business, I was a “Yes Girl.” As a young woman in a world of entrepreneurs, everyone makes you think you have to say Yes to everything, otherwise you’ll lose valuable opportunities. I did that for 2 years straight. Yes, yes, yes – and I completely burned out. Anything our clients would ask, Yes. Any events I would be invited to, Yes. Any contract I was offered, Yes. I always had that saying stuck in the back of my mind, and that truly made me believe there was no way around it.

Now that I have more expertise under my belt, I am a firm believer that “No” is actually the most powerful tool. I am very secure in who I am, what Stellar stands for, and whom I want to align ourselves with. Saying No and sticking to my gut is the only tool I have to be able to enjoy my job as much as I do and, most importantly, to preserve my mental health.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?

90% of our business comes from word-of-mouth, and there are no words for me to describe how that makes me feel. From leaving my entire family and friends behind in Italy and not knowing anyone at all in this country, to people talking about me and referring Stellar to other entrepreneurs.. Never in my wildest dreams I had pictured something like this, and I am eternally grateful for my worldwide circle of supporters. I feel every bit of love sent my way, and I never take any of it for granted.
