We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Frances Rodriguez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Frances thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us about a time where you or your team really helped a customer get an amazing result?
Over the past three years I feel I’ve changed the way my customers think about a product. They think twice or read the ingredients before applying to their body. But one customer that stands out told me about her son, which is a teenager used my activated charcoal, we call Vikin. He had bad acne to start and was using different name brand companies to clear out his skin but was just getting worst. My soap helped clear out his face. It’s hard being a teenager in highschool. His self esteem was boosted, and hearing that really made me feel my products are really making a difference.
Frances, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started my business back in 2019, my daughter was suffering from eczema. I made products for her not thinking of turning it into a business. One of my coworkers at the time offered to purchase a custom soap log and a small passion for helping my daughter grew into wanting to help everyone. Fast forwarding three years I am making soaps bars, candles, lotion bars, bug repellent, perfumes and so much more. I am beyond proud of myself for not giving up, because giving up is so easy but learning the ins’ and outs’ of running a business is worth wild. Creating content is second nature, meanwhile doing my numbers is much harder.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I think the moment I almost failed was my turning point. In a business, better yet anything in life, you have to have balance. If you do not balance your business, social and self care you can burn out. And for me I was burning out because I didn’t know how to switch off, I kept working and taking on new projects. We have to listen to our body and really have a set plan and schedule. I am a stay at home mom of 3 kids in different ages one being just couple months old. It can get hard trying to work and run your business. But failure lead me to my success. My own customers pushed me to continue and not give up but to take breaks. I love them for that.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Growing up with my mother, being a strong Latina, raised me as the type to do it all you don’t need no one. But in order to succeed you need a team. I started to change it up and say yes I can not do it on my own. I do need help. As soon as I started reaching out for help I personally started to feel better. I didn’t feel so burnt out and the weight of doing it all just lifted off me.
