Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Frances Praet. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Frances, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My first album was definitely the most meaningful project I’ve had the opportunity to create! Similarly to most musicians, I’ve spent the majority of my life writing music. Releasing recordings of that music into the world is an entirely different beast, and the first collection of songs on my first album were my favorite ones I’d written up to that point in my life (so at the time, my life’s work!!).
There is also a song on that album, the second single I ever released, called “Rest Assured” that was written while my grandfather was passing away. He suffered from dementia, and that song was my way of processing the loss of him before he’d actually died. It’s such a gut wrenching experience that I know many people can relate to, and releasing that song (as well as the accompanying video) meant a lot to me.
Frances, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
To anyone new, it’s so nice of you to take the time to read this article – so happy you’re here!! My name is Frances and I’m a singer/songwriter based out of Nashville, TN. I have difficulty pinning myself to a particular genre, but my music is a mixture of country, singer songwriter, classic rock, and pop!
I’ve never been good at writing songs that don’t mean much to me. I use songwriting as a way to process all my feelings and thoughts about the world around me, so my personality always comes through. Whether or not that’s a good thing is for you to decide!
I also co-produce all my own music with my dad, J. David Praet, who has been doing this since long before I was born. I always try to work with musicians and creative people I know will bring as much heart and passion into my projects as I do, whether that be playing live or working on my recorded music.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Taking the time to get to know the creative authors that pique your interest is the best way to support your community! When I hear a new song that I like, I try to make an effort to listen to the other work they’ve put out and add the songs I like to playlists to make sure I can give them another stream at some point down the line. In the world of music specifically, streaming an artist’s song one time will not do much for them. Adding them to a playlist and following their journey to support their future work as well makes a world of difference!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
If you choose the path of making your creative passions your career, it will be an emotionally charged journey (at least in my case and many of my friends’ cases!). When you share art with the world, it is very personal, and people can be cruel. If you go into it for any reason other than the love of the work you’re doing, you will experience disappointment and frustration constantly. You have to truly love what you’re doing in order for it to work in any capacity, because success has nothing to do with numbers when it comes to a creative career. As long as you are happy with the work you’re creating, you are successful!
For me personally, my main goal with music is to create songs I love and projects that I am proud of. As long as I enjoy listening to it I feel like I’ve accomplished my mission! Hopefully other people will love it just as much as I do, and find comfort in knowing they are not alone in any emotion they’re sorting through at the moment!
