We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Frances Armstrong . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Frances below.
Frances, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Pheme is the personification of fame and renown. As a hairstylist and business owner, I wanted people to feel as fabulous by providing the best service and haircare for natural curly hair that I can offer. That involves ensuring the products are made with natural ingredients. When using Pheme Hair Care, your hair will look and feel healthy, moisturized, and hydrated that it will have people acknowledging its splendor.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have been in the cosmetology industry for almost 25 years, based in Virginia. I have a bachelor’s degree in business and a Master’s degree in business administration. When I first started in the industry, I knew I wanted to own my own business. My plan was to build a brand that would later help create other brands and hopefully inspire others to build their own empires from behind the chair. Over the years, I’ve participated in multiple hair shows, published in hair magazines, taught classes, and built a salon business that’s won awards and is still operating for over 17 years.
I feel it is important to demonstrate that cosmetologists can have a successful career behind the chair and away from the chair with determination, education, and motivation.
When I created Pheme, it was a solution for having more natural ingredients in hair products that would keep curly textures hair hydrated and moisturized longer, not containing harsh chemicals and alcohols that dry out natural hair. It can be challenging to keep curly hair moisturized throughout the day. I wanted my clients and customers to have products that would help alleviate that issue.
I am proudest of myself for always striving to be the best loving example for my two sons. Everyone has a talent, a gift that will one day make a great impact.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I have learned that building a social media presence takes a lot of time! It also helps to be a little tech savvy. At first, I was overthinking the process, which was ultimately hindering Pheme having a social media presence. When I stopped thinking and simply started doing, Pheme started to gain attention. Graphic design is not my strong attribute, so I hired one, and as a team, developed a social media presence that was concise and consistent with my hair care brand’s identity. Demonstrating Pheme’s products has been an essential part of building customer’s confidence and trust in the product’s performance. They want to see how products perform on various hair textures.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing clientele is to be consistent. Be professional. Continue to educate yourself so you can better provide for others.
