We recently connected with Frances Altman and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Frances thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I feel success comes in small units of reaching your goals. There may be a series of completing your goals and that becomes a successful project. I have developed that viewpoint by using one small success to build another. My entire career has been based on reinventing or compiling one success after another.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Basically I got into my career accidentally. Originally I wanted to become a court reporter and studied in the secretarial area. But writing opportunities kept directing me into the communications area. As a stay-at-home Mom I began writing short children’s stories and a writing career expanded from there.
Even while attending Secretarial College I was working part time for a radio station writing continuity. Writing just seemed to come naturally and easily and so I continued connecting with my imagination. Today it has resulted in my latest book Destiny’s Daughter highlighting the life of Civil War surgeon and suffragist, Mary Edwards Walker.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Moving from editorial writing into marketing as described earlier. I realized I knew little about public relations or any aspect of marketing. Being willing to return to college in my 40s was a big decision,. i
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being equipped to teach others the how-to part. So many people think sales approaches are easy. For me sales means building a whole new personality. Ordinarily I consider myself a quiet person. But when it is necessary to approach someone to give them an elevator speech so to speak, I have had to develop a more friendly outreach. So I have had to practice or rehearse what I want to say. In fact, in some ways it is acting.
