We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Fraktal Carter. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Fraktal below.
Fraktal, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I realized I wanted to pursue my creative photography as a career when I started combining my freelance job as a production lighting tech and my career as a performance artist altogether. To be seen as as PA , your photos and videos are your resume, they want to see what you can do, the “WOW” factor, the mind bending tricks that it takes years of practice to be able to do. They want to see how creative your video edits can be, the long exposures, the cinematic experience, the whole ” I will have you on the edge of your seat” the entire time. You have to be able to provide these show stopping experiences in order to be booked as a performer. Now how does this tie into concert lighting? Lighting is everything. It’s what creates your scene and mood. It’s one of the many moving parts of creating that ” WOW ” when you go to a concert. ( At least for me. )It’s soul satisfying when you build a lighting rig at festivals like Bonaroo or Electric Forest and sit back and see how happy people are. So combining all these different feelings and techniques into one is how I decided to pursue a career in event photography. Also who doesn’t want to help they’re DJ friends capture they’re most memorable moments. SUPPORT YOUR FRIENDS , SUPPORT YOUR LOCALS.
Fraktal, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always had an eye for capturing “The” moment , angles , lighting , creating the scene or vibe. It came naturally to me and felt right. I had so much fun spending hours adventuring to find the right scene if not creating it myself. As for any of my multiple careers my saying is, ” if you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life. ” Never stop learning and never stop growing.
What sets me apart from everyone else? My visible passion . My vision and drive. I am the person that will jump up and down or hype myself up when I get a great shot with my camera, The same person that sets up lights and learns something new will not stop thanking the person who taught me. If you pay attention to me there’s always a crazy noise or happy dance happening when I think nobody is looking. As a photographer I aim to make everyone comfortable as I was a person who was very shy and soft spoken. You would NEVER have thought that these days. A person’s genuine smile is the best smile, so why force it? We’re here to have fun right ?
I’m most proud of my growth and how much I’ve learned over the past year. Thanks to my fans, supporters, friends and family I’ve been pushed to keep going and learning even in my darkest times. Nothing is more exciting than finally feeling 100% sure about your decisions. Here we are !
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my social media presence off of my performance art as well as promoting for a rave promoter on the east coast. Social media is one thing that I focused on for a long time. Fell of for a bit. Turned around and came back to it recently because “thats the trend” . It’s hard to constantly or frequently post , but it does pay off. I noticed that when I decide to cut back on posting it did hurt me a little bit as far as algorithms go. The more you post the more reach you have, Also, travel to more states, tag the places you are, create fan bases in more states ! Helps a lot.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The memories I capture in time as a photographer. We can’t go back in time physically, however we can mentally. A photo can bring back all those emotions you felt at that current moment. Some are so beautiful you just have to keep it forever, As you should. Now being able to capture those photos for other people, seeing how happy they are when you show them the results. What’s not to love?
