Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Forrest Savage. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Forrest, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Musically…..I’m currently taking a huge risk betting on myself. Spending over two decades performing primarily in groups and duos has given me stage seasoning, but performing alone will be a completely different animal. I feel like I have a lot left in the tank. My main group recently disbanded due to relocation reasons, this has left me as essentially a solo performer. First night on my own….i won a performance contest and really found self validation in doing so. It made me realize that dreams don’t die if you don’t let them.
Forrest, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a solo hip-hop artist based out of Lawrence, Kansas. I’ve been performing regionally for the past 23 years. I honestly got into music as an early adult…..it was a way to meet people and fit in. Nowadays it’s more of a type of therapy for me. I recently released a new solo project, and have been nominated and won some awards locally in the past year.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’m going through a pivot musically as we speak. Although I’ve done many solo performances in the past. For the first time in over 20 years I’m solely focusing on being a one man act. These past few years I performed primarily in a duo. We received quite a bit of buzz over the last year, won several performance contests and got nominated for some awards. The other guy in our duo relocated out of state, and although we’ve discussed doing something down the road, I know that it’s “my time”. My first night as a solo performer I won a performance contest….and although it was validating. I still find myself being nervous for my upcoming performances. These next few shows are really gonna be a proving ground, and are set to define me not only as an entertainer but as a person. I’m eager for the challenge, but if I’m being honest, my anxiety is through the roof.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
In music….if you want to build an audience…..you have to have a social media presence. I’ve been working diligently on promoting upcoming shows. I do this by making event pages, creating unique flyers, I post reels regularly showcasing my songs, sometimes I perform funny skits to drum up interest. I’ve always felt that you have to take calculated risks but you also need to not take things too seriously. At the end of the day, this is an escape….a way to express myself therapeutically…..if I’m not enjoying myself and having fun……then I shouldn’t be doing it.
