We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Forever Soul Live a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Forever thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
To be a master of your craft, you have acquired the comprehensive knowledge or skill in a subject. Comprehension is expressed as understanding all, or enough of all, elements or aspects of something. By these definitions, it is obvious that to become a master takes a great deal of time, effort and desire.
Art has been a passion of both of ours for a long time. We both come from families of artists and creatives. We grew up in cities that has thriving art communities. We knew honing whatever skills and talents we have, was a way out of the oppression of BIPOC communities.
Writing and performing music/poetry gave us a way to express thoughts we were not comfortable saying out loud. From going to creative art classes to performing at open mics, we learned stage presence and the true essence and vulnerability art brings. We also found numerous of mentors along our journey who gave us the wisdom to continue the knowledge of self.
Putting passion, time, and effort into your craft is all important. However, you must believe in what you bring to the table. You must believe in your voice and the impact it makes in the world. Self confidence and determination is so important for success in this industry.
Overall, the largest obstacle we have in our way sometimes is ourselves. Practice your craft and believe in your dreams .
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Forever Soul Live, is a creative artistic duo who provides teaching classes, open mics, artist development and resources. We are also a poet and conscious lyricist duo. We are content creators and have numerous of videos and performances on Youtube and other social media platforms. Our company also offer vegan catering services, spirituality services and home decor/art services. We believe our creole roots as well as both of us being from two very different but big cities (New York and New Orleans), we are able to give a different perception of the Black Experience within art, music, food and soul. We are proud of being a cross cultural, community based collective who have gave back and curated for the community in different states. Even though our collective is only two people, we feel our voice is as loud as thousands and will continue to break down barriers to help artists like ourselves hone their craft and get resources while doing so.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for us being creatives is having the opportunity to give back to people in our community . We are philanthropists and believe success comes full circle when you are able to pay it forward. We grew up in big cities where we we fortunate to see artists from our communities give back. Providing safe spaces in our communities is very important especially in the climate our country is going. Art provides hope. We hope to be an impact within the world around us.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
A goal of ours is being able to give back to those who gave to us. Helping our families to creating community centers and resources for those who gave it to us. What is the mission of your life’s purpose? We ask each other this question all the time and make move from that. It helps us keep our ego in check while we continue to water our growth. We want to see those around us succeed as much as we want to see ourselves succeed.
