We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Fly Ty. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tariq below.
Fly Ty, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
What it takes to be successful is being around winners who you look up to and gaining knowledge. Also stepping into your purpose and every year challenging yourself to be better than you was the year before. Basically being your own competition and learning not to be afraid to collab with like minded people in your own niche. Learning from others while applying your own talent is what makes you unique within your own brand.
No I don’t have any stories to illustrate my point of view and how to develop my view.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My names Fly Ty and I’m born and raised in Flatbush, Brooklyn NYC. I grew up into fashion as a young adult and loved hip hop so fashion was always there for me to admire from 90s hip hop era. I grew up on Jay-Z, Mobb Deep, NaS, DMX, Kriss Kross, Slick Rick and Biggie Smalls who all had they own unique looks in fashion who I looked up to as a young adult.
As I’ve gotten older and started working to afford the clothes I wanted since expensive sneakers and clothes was soo hard for parents likes mines to afford that I wanted cause of the brands back then. I started to dress up and naturally become fashionable in the public eye by people so gained attraction from how I put outfits and color schemes together. I got out of my comfort zone of wanting to look like everyone else. So at 17 years old I got interested in designing my own clothes and eventually invested into myself into getting my own sewing machine. Then was working on my own clothes ever since back then. While wearing my own clothes I designed outside in public, I’d often gain attention leading to potential customers asking was the pieced I’m wearing made by me. Thats what slowly helped me start branding in the beginning. I started then hanging out with other accomplished designers who were known in the industry. Eventually I started learning from them and how they navigated in the fashion industry from working with celeb clientale to gaining vip access in various industry events. Just making myself a student of the game.
As we all started getting older becoming grown men going seperate ways I then used my skills and knowledge to do my own thing. Which later put myself in many positions in the fashion industry which eventually led to me working behind the scenes of NYFW shows getting celebrities styled on the runways, video shoots and other industry events.
I’m most proud of my accomplishments I’ve achieved over the last 10 years such as panels, interviews publication articles, and just being a fashion influencer to to motivate others to succeed. What sets me apart from others is my versatility style in fashion & how I move successful as if I’m already where I want to be. The main thing i want fans and followers to know of is to be where you want to be starts with your mindset and your vision. Without it, you wont be successful if you cant see where u can see yaself years from now.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The source of new clients for me would be through Instagram since thats a platform that most industry professionals look at as a digital business card. Since at most industry events people exchange their usernames so see their business and what they may have going on.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing your clientale would be network with other influencers in your niche. Stepping out of your comfort zone with those other influencers to engage with they content and even collab with them to gain even attention of their community to your brand. Also creating polls on your platform and answering potential clientale questions without having an ego. I’d also recommend joining groups, workshops or even shows in your niche because you’d never know who youd expect to meet. Which leads to me last saying to always keep a digital business card or physical business card in handy when networking you already ready and dont have to get ready.
