Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to FLY GUY. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
FLY, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I was 13 years old when I was sitting in my older brother Simeon’s bedroom watching him make beats and rap. I’m a child of Hip-Hop culture and it was at that point that I knew I wanted to be involved in it to some degree for the rest of my life. At first, I wanted to rap; so much so that my eldest brother, Selwyn wrote about me in his first autobiography. The chapter was called ‘My Brother the Rap Star’. I never expected one day to have a DJ career, but that’s the beauty of life. Sometimes your path is already written for you before you realize.

FLY, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
2008 I moved back to Miami after the previous ten years in Brooklyn. At the time, I was trying to find the Hip-Hop scene that was comparable to what I had been consumed by in Brooklyn but had no luck. A friend of mine suggested I go check out this old school party on South Beach at a spot called Love Hate to at least be around the atmosphere that I like. I went and immediately fell in love with the ambiance. I met the DJs and promoter and established a rapport with them which would eventually lead to them giving me an opportunity to play alongside them every week. I’ve accomplished a lot in the past 15 years that I’ve been a professional. I’ve DJ’d around the world, played private events for some of the biggest music celebrities, but one thing remains the same. I treat every set I do, no matter how high or low profile, with the same passion and commitment to excellence. I think that helps to set me apart from others. The aim has never been to be better than anyone else; rather just to be the very best I can be. I’m at a point in my career now where my reputation for professionalism and my name speak for themselves.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As a DJ, one of the most rewarding things for me is seeing the jubilation on the faces of the audiences I play for. To be able to control peoples’ mood and actions, energy and mindstates is a powerful, beautiful thing.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
COVID-19 brought the entire world to a halt; especially for the hospitality industry. During that time, I spent months DJing virtually on instagram LIVE every night which helped to create an online community of people who are supporters and fans of mine. I also reconnected with my passion for photography which lead to me publishing my first photography book and also having my first exhibition during 2020. Fast forward three years and I’m in an even better position now as a DJ than I was at the time of quarantine but, I’m a firm believer that is because of my faith in God and my resiliency to find a way to PIVOT and survive.
