We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Florencia Rodriguez Lomeli a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Florencia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later?
If I could go back in time, I would start my photography business sooner! I officially launched FlorenciaRL in 2021 when I moved to Florida, working with an amazing design studio to develop my branding and website before taking on my first clients—mostly friends and collaborations to get my name out there. Since I wasn’t originally from Florida, I had to build my client base from scratch, which was both exciting and sometimes very challenging.
At the time, I also had a corporate job, and photography felt more like something I squeezed into my spare time. I hesitated to go all in because I didn’t have a formal photography degree, which made me doubt myself more than I should have. Looking back, I wish I had trusted my passion earlier, invested more in education, and put myself out there through networking. I now know that connections with vendors and fellow photographers are just as important as the work itself!
That said, I believe everything happens at the right time. My journey has been organic, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come. But if I had to give advice to someone starting out? Jump in sooner, believe in yourself, and never underestimate the power of relationships!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Florencia Rodriguez Lomeli, a photographer from Monterrey, Mexico, now based in Fort Lauderdale with my family. Photography has been my passion since I was young—I’ve always been drawn to capturing moments that tell a story. I love documenting people and emotions in a primarily candid way, whether it’s families, couples, or social events. Life moves too fast, and I believe in freezing moments so they can be cherished forever. When I’m not behind the camera, I love to travel, rewatch Gilmore Girls, and enjoy Mexican food—things that bring me joy and inspiration.
Through my business, FlorenciaRL, I offer photography sessions for couples, families, and social events, and in 2024, I expanded into wedding photography—a dream come true. My storytelling approach focuses on natural interactions and genuine emotions rather than overly posed moments. I aim to create images that are both beautiful and authentic.
What sets me apart is my commitment to making clients feel comfortable. I provide mood boards for every shoot which I create based on my clients needs, maintain strong communication, and approach each session with warmth and friendliness. My goal is for clients to not just see their photos but to relive the emotions behind them. I’m proud of how my business has grown organically through word-of-mouth and repeat clients.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
There are so many amazing resources out there, and I wish I had tapped into them sooner! I would have invested in workshops from photographers I admire early on and sought out one-on-one mentorships to learn firsthand from experienced creatives. While I did take some brief photography courses in university, I wish I had pursued more in-depth formal education to strengthen my technical skills and confidence early on.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being a photographer is giving people tangible memories to hold onto forever. You never know how much a photo will mean until time passes—especially when a loved one is no longer here. Photos become treasures, a way to relive moments that might otherwise fade.
Now, as a mom, I feel this even more deeply. Time moves so fast—one day, you’re holding a newborn, and before you know it, they’ve changed completely. I cherish every photo taken during my pregnancy, my wedding, and now, my growing family. Being able to create these lasting memories for others is truly the greatest gift of all.
