We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Flora Bai a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Flora thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Ever since I was a child, I’ve always dreamed of becoming an artist, envisioning my artwork adorning every corner of every city, from grand sculptures to murals and decorative paintings in people’s homes.
For my four years of undergraduate study, I chose environmental design with a focus on interior design. However, starting from my sophomore year, the process of designing architectural projects and dealing with interpersonal relations within a group began to cause me depression. As a result, I turned to drawing illustrations during my free time as a way to escape from negative thoughts and relationships. I remember creating my first series of small installations called “Man in a Case” using mixed media like clay and watercolor. It marked the beginning of my liberation. At that moment, I realized that my personality leaned more toward being a solitary artist. I found my self-value when thinking, creating, and working alone. Life is short, and even though I can’t change the world, I aspire to be happy and free. The process of art creation has proven to be one of the rare activities that can make me forget all my worries and distractions—a divine gift bestowed upon me from above. Drawing is so therapeutic that I lose track of time when immersed in the act of creating art. Despite the uncertainties that may lie ahead on this path, I hope my art will not only bring healing to myself but also resonate with others.
In 2019, I graduated from my university and received an offer from SVA. I moved to NYC and officially started my journey as an illustrator.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As an NYC-based illustrator, I have a deep passion for subjects like animals, nature, astrology, and wonderlands, where I play with spatial perspective. Holding an MFA in illustration from SVA, I specialize in picture book illustration, commercial illustration, editorial illustration, small installations (such as air clay jewelry), and layout design. My work is recognized by 3×3 Magazine, World Illustration Award (AOI), American Illustration (AI-AP), Communication Arts, Creative Quarterly, Penguin Random House, the Rockefeller Center, and more. One of my greatest joys is creating personalized pet illustrations, infusing each artwork with personality and hidden stories that become treasured memories for my furry clients. Crafting meaningful illustrations that hold a special place in the hearts of those who commission them always brings me immense fulfillment.
Currently, I share my home studio with Zima, a Yorkshire Terrier, who adds to the inspiration that fuels my illustrations.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Illustrations are generally easier to understand compared to fine art due to their functional nature. However, I remain dedicated to making my visual essays accessible and relatable to all, even if they may resonate most with kindred spirits who truly grasp their essence. My aim is to create each artwork as a small, captivating world, especially when crafting personalized illustrations for my clients. These pieces are intentionally designed to evoke a sense of tranquility and intimacy, avoiding loud and overwhelming elements. To be honest, they truly come to life when printed out and displayed in the comforting embrace of one’s home.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is driven by the goal to transform my 2D illustrations into immersive installations and public art experiences. Despite being a concept explored in the past, I dream of allowing viewers to physically step inside my illustrations, engaging their senses and creating a multi-sensory experience. Breaking the boundaries between the audience and the artwork, I aim to leave a lasting impression on people and offer a unique encounter through my art.
