We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Flo Rudoff a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Flo, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with education – we’d love to hear your thoughts about how we can better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career
School was never my thing. Making friends always came easy to me, but algebra and essays…. forget about it. It all was extremely boring and anxiety-provoking. When am I ever going to use this is a question I thought to myself 50 times a day. Watching my friends excel in honor classes, while I had to attend summer school for bad grades made me feel awful! I was never an academic and was never going to be. Ever since I could talk, teachers would tell my mom: “We love Flo, but she talks too much”. I am forever thankful for that chatty little girl because she has made me who I am today. Do I think all of what we teach in school is useless? Absolutely not. But I do wish that I had had the opportunity to learn more about business, taxes, jobs, and more about how to navigate life as an adult contributing to society.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Spray tanning fell into my lap. I walked into a salon to get my first spray tan ever, little did I know that I would end up working there as a spray tan artist/salon manager for 5 years! As fun as it was working there with all my girlfriends, being 23 and feeling a little lost, I left to figure out my path in life. After a few months of interviews and odd jobs, I couldn’t stop thinking about my one true love… SPRAY TANNING. I quickly decided to take a leap of faith and start my own mobile tanning business. Since then, I have grown an incredible clientele, produced two of my own products, and have big plans for the future! On top of giving a perfect, natural-looking spray tan, my promise is to make people forget that they’re naked in front of a stranger and make an experience that could be very awkward for some, instead be a comfortable and fun-filled experience.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Starting your own business is hard. Starting your own business just before a pandemic is even harder. This was my first bump. It was very daunting trying to build connections and hold on to the ones I had already made while the rules of the world were constantly changing. Since then, there have still been ups and downs! Busy seasons come and go and staying positive through it all is challenging. It helps that I have a squad of incredible girlfriends with their own businesses, and we can all cheer each other along. If you want it, go get it. Don’t give up! Things aren’t always smooth sailing, but you gotta ride the wave!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
At the very beginning of my business, I tried different things to bring in more clientele. For example, I paid for a couple of ads and offered free services. The ads didn’t bring in many clients if any at all, and giving out free services doesn’t pay the bills. I quickly came to the realization that the best, and most cost-effective way to find new clients is referrals. All I have to do is make sure I go above and beyond to provide an experience that people want to share with others, easy! Having a referral from a happy client means more to me and my baby business than anything.
