We were lucky to catch up with Flex Smith & Marsha Smith recently and have shared our conversation below.
Flex Smith & Marsha Smith , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Marsha and I met at Penn State University at a friends birthday party back in 2010. I saw her in the corner, leaning against the wall, and I just had to introduce myself. I worked hard that night to get her phone number, but she wouldn’t give me a chance. At the end of the night, a friend asked that we all exchange BBM (black berry messenger) numbers so that we could keep in touch. That was my way in.
A few days go by, and I thought “let me send her a BBM asking her to give me a call.” I provided my phone number in the text with a note saying, “ Hey Marsha, I just got in from class can you give me a call?” As soon as Marsha called, I said “Bang, I got you.” Marsha said, “got what.” I said, “I got your phone number.” Lol
Since then we haven’t left each other’s side. I didn’t know that she would go on to become a business partner and most importantly my wife.
Before I graduated in 2012, I was on the path of going to medical school with the goal of becoming a pediatric surgeon. My education and skill set certainly made me capable, but my heart wasn’t fully into it. Marsha asked me, “Flex, what do you really want to do? What brings you joy?” I said, “I want to help people. I want to help people live a long happy life and have a functional and beautiful body at the same time.”
This was the beginning of us building our fitness company “The BodySmith Inc”
Marsha and I said, “If this is going to happen, a few things would need to fall into place.”
We started working and building our business in-between our class work. We began getting clients shortly after. In January 2013, we had a vision of us moving to Florida and establishing the opportunity to work anywhere in the world. In February 2013, Marsha’s grandmother was turning 100 years old and was hosting a huge birthday celebration in Florida. You see where this is going?
While at the birthday celebration, a few of Marsha’s family members asked us what our plans were. We told them that we wanted to move to Florida and build our fitness company.
Before the celebration ended, we were offered the opportunity to move-in with some family, and by April 2013 we moved in.
Since then, we have not looked back and our company is still thriving today.
So, if you are undecided about what to do or possibly afraid to make that next move… take that leap!
Most importantly…Take that risk!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
We help Moms & Dads get Strong, Fit, and Confident with our 12-week challenge “The Fit Parent Blueprint”
We understand that people want to exercise. They want to build fitness into a lifestyle, but it’s hard. There just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day to get all these to-do’s complete.
As business owners and parents of 3 beautiful children (ages 1, 4, & 14), we get it. It’s not easy. That’s why we created “The Fit Parent Blueprint”
The Fit Parent Blueprint is designed to help you:
1. Build consistency,
2. Increase your energy, so that you can play with your kids, &
3. Feel confident in the way you look
After completing the 12- week challenge, you will:
1. Feel healthier,
2. Be more confident when exercising,
3. No longer guess how or what you should workout, &
4. Finally build fitness into a routine you enjoy
This is what “The Fit Parent Blueprint” will get you:
1. A program designed to fit your specific lifestyle,
2. A personalized fitness plan with video demonstrations for every exercise,
3. Weekly coaching calls,
4. Access to our client-only accountability group, &
5. Fitness routines customized for at-home workouts, gym workouts, or both.
…Think of “The Fit Parent Blueprint” as having a personal trainer in your back pocket no matter where you go.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Honestly, what separates us from the rest is that we truly care about our clients mental health.
We can provide you all the information and resources on how to push and pull weights, but the most important part is how you are doing as a person.
Our clients have goals, our clients believe they can do it, and they can. Somewhere along their journey in life, they stopped believing, possibly hurt themselves while training, or even hired a coach that made them never want to exercise again. But, that doesn’t help if you have goals and want to achieve them.
This is where Marsha and I come in. We gain an understanding or where you are, and talk about creating the 2.0 version of you. We ask question to understand you lifestyle and design a plan to support that. The best part is the weekly coaching calls. We meet on FaceTime, Zoom, or will give you a call to make sure that you are doing ok. We do not talk about weaknesses we highlight opportunities.
This is our opportunity to build trust, provide you support, & listen as you unpack all those to-do’s taking up your brain space.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Understanding our clients has been the most effective strategy for growing our clientele.
In the beginning, we wanted to help everybody… and we still do. The only problem is that we cannot.
We needed to find our niche.
Marsha is a Mom and I am a Dad. We have goals and a vision for our life that we fight for together everyday. Matter fact, we are still fighting.
We learned that once you become a parent, taking care of you becomes a bit more challenging. Some days you don’t eat, some days you wont exercise, and your realize the things you use to do… you no longer do. Your routines become broken.
This is why we designed “The Fit Parent Blueprint” to help Moms and Dads remember that they are still capable and that they do not need to give up.
All it takes is daily effort & consistency… and we help our clients develop that.
