We recently connected with Fletcher Cleaves and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Fletcher thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
The reason behind our mission is simple, no matter what life throws at you, never give up! Our mission is to empower the Community through motivation! Our motto is “The Sky Is NOT the Limit” which stems from the quote “don’t tell me the sky is limit when there are footprints on the moon”! There are no limitations in life! The only limitations are the ones you impose on yourself!
Our founder, Fletcher Cleaves, was a collegiate athlete who became paralyzed due to a distracted driver! Despite this horrendous incident, he chose to overcome adversity and realize there are no limitations in life! Through his story we have empowered the world and helped save Millions of lives while showing everyone that no matter what life throws at you, you have an opportunity to get back up and make a new outcome!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Fletcher Cleaves; I am a Memphis native whose story is full of resilience, hope and inspiration. Welcome to my website! Following a life-altering event, I discovered a passion for public speaking and began to promote the importance of safe driving and overcoming adversity through special appearances including: College Game Day, ESPN TV, ESPN radio, SportsCenter, Outside the Lines with Bob Ley, and a National Safety Transportation Board (NSTB) event in Washington D.C., as well as at many schools, colleges, sports teams, community organizations, and businesses.
My journey began in the fall of 2009. During this time, I was a lively freshman enjoying my first semester of college on a football scholarship at Lambuth University when, suddenly, everything changed. On September 10, 2009, I was involved in a tragic car accident caused by a distracted driver, who was suspected to have been texting while driving. This event left me paralyzed from the chest down, and I was challenged with the task of starting my life over. Now, a quadriplegic, I had to relearn everything in order to adjust to my new circumstances.
Following the accident, my family and I endured a number of obstacles, including both of my parents losing their jobs in order to become my full-time caretakers. However, through all of the setbacks, I was determined to prevail. After a year of intense rehabilitation, I decided to re-enroll in school at the University of Memphis, where I attained a degree in Computer Science. My recovery helped me recognized that sharing my journey could not only motivate others, but also save lives which brings us here.
Everyone has a story. Some are blissful, while others are tragic. Mine, on the other hand, is full of triumph. I desire to share my experiences with hopes that more people feel empowered to endure difficult times and continue to fight for their dreams. To many, my accident seemed like the end of a young man’s promising future, but on the contrary, it became the prologue to my destiny. Sure, there were times when I wanted to give up, but I made a choice to overcome my challenges, believe in a prosperous future and motivate others to do the same.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A hard lesson that I had to unlearn is that your friends and your family may not be your biggest supporters. Sometimes we get caught up in thinking that our family and friends have to support us and that our success relies on the support of close ones. And it actually does not. Expand your subset of who you are trying to reach and who you think should support you. I thought my friends and family would be my biggest supporters and they were, but they weren’t my biggest clients!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
The biggest thing I would say that helped me build a reputation in my market is definitely word-of-mouth! Never underestimate the power of word-of-mouth. Treat each customer/client with respect and as if it was your first because you never know who is watching and who knows who.
