We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Flavio Venancio a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Flavio, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I have always loved drawing, since I was a little kid. My school books had drawings everywhere and I used to get in trouble for that. My very first experience with tattooing was in 2005. At the beginning I just tattooed friends and family in my neighborhood. And then in 2009 it was when I realized tattooing was what I wanted for my life. From then on, I started to take it seriously and professionally, to study more and participate in seminars to learn different techniques.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Flavio Venancio, I am a tattoo artist from Brazil. I’ve been tattooing for over 18 years. I have worked in some countries such as Indonesia, Australia, Japan and now I am based in Denton, Texas, USA. I opened my first tattoo shop in 2010. At the beginning, I did all types and styles of tattoos however I was always fascinated about Black & Grey and Japanese tattoos in particular. I’ve always been enchanted by the culture, the composition and the flow in the Japanese tattoo, which inspires me and has been my main focus. I like being free to create. As an artist by heart, I like to create an exclusive art for each client. I use a lot of free hand on my projects letting the inspiration of the moment flow, making each tattoo unique. Even if using similar themes or elements, my free hand style makes my tattoos original, singular and different from others.
When I look back, I see that my professional path evolved naturally. But don’t get me wrong, there was a lot of work and effort involved, however my resilience, my passion for the art and the support from other artists and clients brought me to where I stand today.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect for me is that art is a universal language that opens doors to the whole world. Through my art and tattooing I had the opportunity to get to know several countries with different cultures which highly enriches me personally and artistically and it is also very inspiring. Art really has no borders.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The mission that drives my creative journey and my life as well is my desire to evolve and to be a better version of myself every day, professionally and personally. Always studying and learning more, giving my best in each project and making my clients happy with my tattoos. Also to travel to other countries with my art and make new connections, meet different artists and get to know different cultures around the world.
