We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Flavio Carvalho a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Flavio, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I am self taught 3d designer. I think one of the most important skills is being curious about something you want to learn and follow through. It’s easy to get hang up and lose interest. At the time when I was learning 3d, there wasn’t so much places to learn from, like video tutorials and things of that nature. I had to brute force your way in the software.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a brazilian graphic designer and art director based in San Francisco, California. Throughout my career, I’ve specialized in creative strategies and visual concepts with cultural significance and commercial applications. At work, my focus is on branding, graphic design and art direction. I love minimal and modernist aesthetics, and at my spare time I love to play around with 3D. One of the project I am the most proud of is to had worked at Sid Lee during the time we were doing the Rebrand of the NBA team Toronto Raptors.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I think NFT are the future of digital artworks, as it allows some artists a way to sell their artworks when they don’t have a chance or exposure in art galleries. At the same time it feels like that the bubble popped and I lot of people still don’t know what are NFT’s, so I guess time will tell.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
When I started I wasn’t really happy with what I was doing so I decided to create my own artworks and post them on Instagram. After some time I started working on a series of experiments and that really picked up some momentum which help grow my following. That also got me motivated to keep creating.
