We were lucky to catch up with FLAVIA recently and have shared our conversation below.
FLAVIA, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
It’s really important to me in my music to talk about things that matter deeply to me, to be radically honest and authentic, regardless of how scary it may be to share my most personal thoughts and feelings. I want people to feel less alone when they hear my music, to feel seen, heard. Pop with purpose. <3 I wrote my latest release, Call Your Friends, about the very difficult but ever growing issues of depression, addiction and suicide. But I wanted to write from the perspective of HOPE and about asking for help or reaching out to those you love. It’s hard times out there and we really have to look after each other.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a music artist, a songwriter, an actor, a Love Doctor hihi – the HeArt is my specialty. <3 Music and performing have been a part of me since before I can remember. I write for my artist project, as well as other artists in various genres. On the acting side I recently finished up a film in London with the fantastic director, Martin Campbell, and before that a project in Dublin with Jan Komasa and a fabulous cast. I’m so proud of my ability to take anything I go through in life and transmute it into art. It is such medicine to know that no matter how difficult the situation, I can turn those feelings and emotions into art that might help someone else on their own journey.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The system is really tough for artists at the moment, and it has been for a while. Our art is wildly undervalued, we’re expected to wear so many hats now with social media etc, and we are needing to constantly feed the machine with releases, content, visuals, that makes it difficult to focus wholly on the art. But the good news is that the fans, the listeners, the supporters have all the power. You get to decide how you support an artist. Show up for the artists you love with bells and whistles. Buy their merch, go to their shows (and dance your asses off!), stream their music, buy their music online, share their releases, lift up their voices and their creations. Luckily, social media has made it easier than ever for people to support their favorite artists and their releases.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is when I get to be part of someones healing journey. The amount of people who have written to me or come up to me at a show and let me know how much a song of mine changed their life, how it made them feel seen, how they felt they had never been represented in a song, how they felt less alone or see things a little differently. I mean, it doesn’t matter how big or small, that’s literally changing lives. And I pinch myself every day that I get to connect with people in this way. Through sharing my most vulnerable thoughts, feelings and experiences with the world, I get to connect with people all around the world. That’s magic.
