We recently connected with Fiyin Adewunmi and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Fiyin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents took every risk to ensure I had the best possible upbringing. Moving to the United States from a comfortable life in Nigeria was not something they had to do, but they did it for my siblings and myself. They always let me express myself, which gave me tremendous confidence to pursue anything I put my mind to. My success is a direct reflection of their exceptional parenting.
Fiyin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
There are a couple things that define who I am: God, family, music and business. The indies try I find myself in is that of information technology (IT). I work for a company that solves financial problems that our customers have. Outside of that, I work in music management and run my organization (Grade Point Adewunmi). Starting with the music, I manage my best friend, J’ray who is a budding Afrobeats artist. Make sure to check him out. I am passionate about music, as I play the drums and piano. And it is a major goal of mine to continue to push great music out to listeners. I also want to see my brother succeed in his goals as well. As for my organization, I started it in 2017 with the aim of helping K-12 students prepare for the future that is ahead of them through tutoring, mentoring and volunteering. Most minority and less privileged kids might not have that necessary knowledge of how education, business and finances work in the United States and I want to help them bridge that gap. As well as any other kids that need my help.
What sets me apart from others is my passion for helping others. I have made that my number 1 mission in life, over money or fame. I am not sure many would go that route, but who can blame them?
I am most proud of starting my organization and pushing J’ray’s music out in the last couple years. I want people to know that all they have seen is just scratching the surface. There is so much still to come from me.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The most important goal I have right now is building communities from the ground up. Which means starting with the youth. I think that a lot of the issues we face today are a direct result of not preparing kids for the future. Unprepared children become underdeveloped adults and the cycle continues. If I can positively impact kids, I can make a difference for the coming generations. This goes back to my organization, Grade Point Adewunmi. Preparing children educationally, financially and mentally. Mature children will be well equipped with the tools to succeed as adults. And that will only trickle down to those that follow them. Thus, making our communities better places as a whole.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
No I do not think this. Mainly because I don’t think there is such a thing as a non-creative. I believe some of us are just in the public eye while others are in private or they have not tapped into that ability yet. Everything is creative. You do not have to stream, make music or art. I always hear people say they don’t have talent or a skill that makes them special and that is the most irritating statement to hear. Everybody has something special they can do that I guarantee you a billion people cannot do. If you do not believe me, make a list of your talents and I’ll assure you that you are more creative than you think. Just tap into it.
