Fiona , appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Growing up my dad played alot of
Fiona , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi! My name is Fiona Stever and I am a musician, currently Im studying tuba performance at Metropolitan state University as well as playing in Interpretive Tyranny! I started playing bass round about five years ago and have played tuba for about 8! even though its far as the rock industry is concerned im still very new Im excited for all of the new experiences I will have!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is growth! I’ve never been someone that picks up musical things as quickly or easily as some others, and had to learn pretty early that comparison doesn’t tend to work out well for me. after learning that however, it was freeing to be okay with not being instantly good and eventually found the process of growth much more invigorating. the best person to compare yourself to is yourself!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I remember my first year of college was pretty rough. It was fresh after covid and for the first tie in around two years I was going back to school! sadly that year I got a pretty bad taste of personal failure, My dad and I moved round about the same time as the end of my first semester. it was on a Tuesday in December, Im having trouble remembering the exact date but I was at a Walmart looking for plates/other household items when I received a call from my lessons teacher. The thing about being a music student especially in performance, is that you really really reaaallly want to make sure you know your dates. I had missed my performance final and failed my first semester of music school. During this period of time I had seriously considered quitting performance altogether. The semester that followed I was not given any financial aid and had to figure out how to pay collage out of pocket. that semester was hard, I was working about 20-30 hours a week while also trying to sustain being in college and 3 orchestras at the same time. I was stressed often and felt like quitting a lot but I persevered and now actually have my financial aid back!
