We were lucky to catch up with Fiona Maura recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Fiona, thanks for joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I am very blessed to have been born into a musical family. My parents homeschooled my brother and I and gave us a creative and holistic upbringing. My mom was born in Ireland and my family performed Irish/folk music as “The Chalmers Family Band” at various festivals around Florida. My parents involved me in dance and theater which were passions of mine through out adolescence and built my foundation for performance. When I was 16 my mom and I visited many music focused colleges through out the country before choosing to study the Recording Industry Songwriting Emphasis at Middle Tennessee State University. If it wasn’t for my parents introducing music and encouraging me to to follow my passion I don’t think I’d be in Nashville today. My parents are very supportive of me pursuing my dreams which I am beyond thankful for. They are my biggest inspirations as they’ve lived a life of adventure and accomplished the unimaginable by cycling the world for 3 1/2 years in the Chalmers Global Tour Cycling for a Better World.

Fiona, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Fiona Maura is a dream pop songstress originally from the space coast of Florida, currently residing, writing, and performing in Nashville, TN. Her genre-bending sound fuses modern folk melodies with atmospheric texture, ambient synths, and ethereal lo-fi waves creating a psychedelic pop feel. With influences like Jewel, Aurora, Sabrina Claudio, and Billie Eilish, Fiona’s unique style focuses on transcendent experiences and mystical imagery.
Fiona grew up in a musical family with strong Irish/folk roots, traveling and performing in various Florida folk festivals with The Chalmers Family Band. These foundational musical experiences foreshadowed her artist career as she circled back to the same festivals and performed solo years later. After graduating from Middle Tennessee State University with a major in Recording Industry and a minor in Psychology, Fiona is gearing up to release more whimsical music which channels her creative soul and shimmering free spirit.
“My life’s mantra of “creating your own reality” is what sets me apart. I am unapologetically and authentically myself both on and off stage, in person and online. Designing my visuals with a fairytale aesthetic embellishes the ambient music resulting in a magical transcending feeling. I am shaping the world I’m living by creating art I’m passionate about, constantly growing into my ultimate version and radiating light into the atmosphere. It fuels my soul when someone relates with my music. Music is my coping mechanism and if i can help a someone feel less alone by my lyrics I feel fulfilled and happy. I just released my dreamy beachy lullaby “Oceans Wave Goodbye” and I am super proud of it.”
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I would love to see a society prioritizing the support of small up and coming artists and creatives. Showing up for local bands, buying the show ticket, merch, cd’s, etc. Especially sharing the artist/creative on social media. Interaction on online platforms go along away for up and coming artists, thus more creatives supporting each other both online through comments, shares, and saves go a long way. In person support such as word of mouth and attending local creative events (farmers markets/craft fairs) is vital to the to the creative ecosystem as well. I am in the songwriter community in Nashville and feel so blessed for such a supportive family here. We all go to each others shows and can sing all the words each others songs.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson I had to unlearn was “society’s cage.” The older I get the more I am going back to my younger self. My inner child a free spirit with big dreams and hopes of her future. As I went through middle school to college I conformed to societies limits and expectations. I lost who i was before the world told me who to be. After college I I dove into my dream self fully and fully engulfed into the ethereal strong cosmic goddess “Fiona Maura.” I adopted by middle name “Maura” meaning “Star of the Sea” for my artist name. This time of unlearning felt like the rebirth I needed to become my fullest potential. Unlearning the rules of society and defying reality is beyond freeing. Escape societies cage, we are a pearl in the worlds oyster and are capable of anything and everything.
