We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Fiona Anavi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Fiona below.
Fiona , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Making the switch from an art director to a photographer who creative directs shoots was…. a change. All change includes risk. However when designing your career it’s vital to keep an open mind and to pay attention to what your strengths are in every situation. Over time I realized I was much more of an asset on set or on location than behind a computer. I hope to always ask myself the tough questions and keep honing and improving for my entire career.
Fiona , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
A creative director/photographer is responsible for the entire vision for a shoot as well the details. I always see the potential in talent. I think my having a clear vision based on lots of visual research, plus my ability to convey it creates a unique and successful shoot. I love motivating a great team to go beyond where they thought they could. The model, makeup artist, hairstylist and wardrobe stylist can make magic if they are simply motivated by someone who believes in them.
My style is very influenced by my NYC upbringing and my grad school experience at SCAD. I enjoy creating dynamic, powerful images that are eye catching but timeless.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I feel lucky every day to be a creative, and an artist. For me the concept of flow is the most rewarding aspect of what I do. When I’m on a shoot the rest of the world goes away. I’m totally focused, flexible, creative and “on”. Ready to share my own personal gift. We all have gifts to share and I think flow is how we know we are at the right place at the right time. To me that’s a clear indication I’m in the perfect field for me.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I am enjoying the book Designing your Life at the moment. It’s a different way of looking at how to pivot if you’ve gone down the wrong path. A non judgmental, creative and refreshing look at how to redesign your career at any point.
