We recently connected with Finn O’Sullivan and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Finn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I recently released an EP called “Fine Things” in October. This project definitely felt very meaningful and exciting to me for a couple different reasons. I’m a really big fan of the show Our Flag Means Death, and sort of fell down a rabbit hole of writing music inspired by the show and the characters last year. The characters and the story really inspired me. I think the show is such a perfect balance of sweet, funny, and sad, and I wanted to explore the world of the characters even further in my own way. It also is such a good representation of queer lives and queer stories, which is something that I feel very strongly about. For this EP, I recorded two of the songs (“Fine Things” and “Scorned (Izzy’s Revenge)”) with a local producer John McVey who I’ve worked with on multiple different projects before. They’re just guitar and vocal tracks, but I think it was fitting with the context of the songs. I recorded the other two songs entirely on my own, which was such a fun experience! I’m definitely still getting the hang of recording and producing myself, but I always have a lot of fun with it that that’s what matters. I was so excited to put this EP out into the world, and I hope that you’ll give it a listen!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a local singer/songwriter based in the Denver area. I started writing music pretty young, and it very quickly turned into something that felt like more than just a hobby to me. I have been asked before why I write songs and play music, and my honest answer is because I feel like I have to. Songwriting is the way that I process a lot of feelings and experiences, and it has been so helpful to have a creative outlook like this over the years. I feel most like myself when I am writing and performing, so I’m very grateful that I’ve had the chance to pursue my passion. I think that my sound is influenced a lot by artists like Taylor Swift and Phoebe Bridgers, who are both artists that I really look up to and admire. I’m currently attending CU Denver in their singer/songwriter program, and I really feel like I’ve been able to find my community here. I think that it’s so important to support and uplift each other within the music industry, and thankfully my school has a community that aligns with that belief. My hope with music is that I can create something that people can connect with and find something relatable in. I have been so influenced and inspired by so many wonderful musicians, and I hope that one day I can maybe have that sort of impact on someone else.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think a big thing when it comes to musicians is going to see live local music! Performance is still a really large source of income for a lot of artists, especially when you’re at a smaller/indie level. Not only this, but going to see local music can introduce you to someone completely new who you might not have discovered otherwise. Going to see local artists and bands is such a great way to support them and show your love. Besides – live music is SO fun to go see!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
This is a little bit of a tricky question to answer, because for me there’s really so much about being a musician that feels rewarding. Getting to share my voice and my art with people is probably one of the more special things to me, and getting to see people connecting with my art in various ways. I think just having this way of expressing myself in a way that feels completely authentic and creative also feels very rewarding to me.
