Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Finch Liu. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Finch, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
In our dual exhibition, my talented co-artist and I present “Dandelion,” an installation that delves into the delicate equilibrium between nature’s ephemeral charm and humanity’s technological and artificial constructs. This layered piece contrasts artificial dandelions set on cotton with their voxel projections and sculpted renditions, urging viewers to ponder the true essence of hope in today’s world.
This collaboration is particularly meaningful for both of us. Not only is it our first joint endeavor, but it’s also a complex synthesis of diverse fabrics and materials, showcasing how seamlessly our artistic methods have intertwined. For me, “Dandelion” resonates deeply, reflecting my personal journey of navigating between life’s fleeting natural moments and the lasting, occasionally artificial, imprints of our modern era.

Finch, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Finch Fengyi Liu, a dedicated graphic designer and digital artist based in Los Angeles.
I hail from a picturesque tropical island in South China. From a tender age, I was drawn towards design—taking baby steps by sketching packaging concepts for my parents’ business and dabbling with design software like CorelDRAW, even though I had much to learn.
During my university years, my innate passion for design found its true calling. I became an integral part of a student organization that managed the campus newspaper. It was there that I fell in love with typography—a craft that I could immerse myself in for hours, creating a harmonious symphony between text and visuals.
Post-university, I secured an internship with Ruder Finn, contributing to projects for various esteemed brands. This experience bolstered my desire for a deeper understanding of design, leading me to pursue a graduate degree at the renowned ArtCenter College of Design. Surrounded by some of the brightest minds in the industry, I grasped the core essence of graphic design, refining my skills and perspectives.
Upon graduation, I joined Native Foreign, a cutting-edge creative agency, where I wore the hats of both a graphic designer and animator. Here, I had the honor of collaborating on projects for high-profile clients like Amazon Studios, OpenAI, and Brooks, among others.
Parallel to my design journey, I’ve been channeling my creativity into digital arts. Recently, I collaborated with a fellow artist on a dual exhibition, showcasing an amalgamation of digital art, motion graphics, and mixed-media installations.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Central to my creative journey is the mission of bridging gaps. Born in South China and now based in Los Angeles, I stand at the crossroads of tradition and modernity, the East and the West. My designs seek to harmonize these contrasts. Whether through digital art that fuses traditional myths with contemporary elements or graphics blending classical typography with modern visuals, my aim is clear: to transcend boundaries and foster a dialogue that unites disparate worlds. In every project, I aspire not just to create, but to evoke understanding and draw the global community a bit closer.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
In reflecting on my journey, there are some resources I wish had come onto my radar earlier. Notably, “Grid Systems in Graphic Design” by Josef Müller-Brockmann is a cornerstone text that would have greatly influenced my foundational understanding of design. Additionally, engaging more actively with design communities such as Behance and AIGA could have fostered invaluable connections and feedback. I also believe that more frequent visits to design museums and exhibitions would have enriched my perspective, providing both historical context and a pulse on contemporary trends.
