We recently connected with Fina Madrid and have shared our conversation below.
FINA, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
After practicing dentistry for 5 years, with bad posture, 6 days a week in corporate fast dentistry, I started experiencing heavy back pain that started being debilitating, I was 30 years old and could not understand how my body was suffering so much. I even got Shingles as such a young age, due to heavy stress that accompanies my career.
I decided I could not live in pain everyday. I was living in a 7-8/10 pain daily and it was becoming my new normal. A friend introduced me to HOT YOGA, and I started going for 3 weeks straight. I started feeling less stress, and my body was not feeling so much pain anymore, it went from an 8, to a 5/10.
I started implementing more holistic practices into my daily life, meal prepping, cutting down sugars, hiking, chiropractor, and more yoga. As I was going daily to yoga, one of my teachers asked me: “Why don’t you do teacher training?”
To which I replied: “I don’t want to teach yoga, I just like how it makes me feel.” She answered: “You don’t have to teach, you will learn the correct alignment to each pose, its benefits, and the training will immerse you in the yoga journey.”
And so…it started.
It changed my life. I was experiencing 0 pain, 2/10 on bad day, and my whole perspective on life was changed. I decided to quit my job, go on mission dental trips around the world, including Cambodia and Nepal, which led me to hiking Everest base camp, and transforming me even more.
When I came back, I decided to start my own dental practice, and be my own boss. I wanted to create a dental practice where I could connect more with my patients, really care about their overall health and wellness. I started including aromatherapy in my office, and really being there for my patients. I also wanted to create a nice working environment, and having happy employees.
I now have been a business owner for 6 years, and I absolutely love it! Off course it comes with its own challenges, but all of these makes you grow and become better at overcoming obstacles. I also created a platform yogidds on instagram where I showed yoga poses that could alleviate pain, and have given yoga classes in the San Diego Dental Society for dentists.
My platform for the moment has become all about my 6 month old baby, its my first time being a mother, but I have every intention to continue creating on my platform, and help or heal anybody that could benefit from it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My mission is to provide quality of dentistry to my patients, and making them feel at ease.
I purchased my own dental practice PRISTINE DENTAL GROUP in 2019, and I provide services in all areas of dentistry.
We also do INVISALIGN, veneers, TMJ pain management with Botox therapy, and cosmetic dentistry. At Pristine Dental Group, we strive to treat our patients with kindness, and we try to maintain a stress free environment.
I am proud to have grown my practice in these 6 years, mainly through word of mouth and reviews, It shows me that our mission is being achieved.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
I really love what I do because I have an opportunity to help people, and be creative in transforming smiles and being hands on.
Ophtalmology is another career I was interested in, the ability to help people with their sight, and doing surgery.
If I was to be in the Arts, I would have chosen to be a dancer, more like contemporary dance. When I was younger, I used to dance and I loved being able to express myself in that form.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
In my opinion and experience, my team will always follow my mood, I noticed I have to be in the zone, clear and level headed, and be a true leader.
By true leader I mean, I am able to do all the tasks I ask of my team. I show them it is possible, and even when a task seems impossible, there are ways to maintain our professionalism, and always remain calm.
In my profession, time is of the essence and attention to detail, we can not let ourselves be overwhelmed, and we always have to show our patients we have things under control. Even if we are very stressed we must always show strength. I always have morning huddles that help us have a more predictable day, and by maintaining myself calm, it spreads to my staff.
I always use the airplane analogy. I am the pilot and you are my team members, if there is turbulence, we must remain calm. Otherwise, there is chaos in the airplane.
I also have meetings, communicate constantly with my team members, and I have an open line of communication with them. I accept constructive criticism, and If at any moment I notice myself being “rude” I accept it and apologize for my behavior,
