Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Filomena Jack. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Filomena, thanks for joining us today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your career and how did you resolve those issues?
One thing that has surprised me is how often I’ve had to remind organizations to pay me. Despite being clear about my payment schedule, there have been numerous times when payments were delayed or not ready when expected. This is especially common with libraries, where multiple people, desks, and protocols can complicate the process of paying contractors. In one instance, a library even issued me a bounced check. Ironically, they had received a grant specifically to pay me, so the funds were there in theory—but the situation still turned into a mess.
The best way I’ve found to counteract this problem is to be crystal clear about payment expectations from the beginning and to send reminders when needed. Never just “let it go” if a payment is delayed—it’s important to advocate for yourself and ensure you’re paid for your work.

Filomena, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi there! I’m Filomena Jack, an artist, educator, and your friendly creative companion from Elmira, NY. I studied fine art at Jersey City University, focusing on photography and sculpture.
My world is filled with vibrant colors, playful designs, and a mission to spread joy through art. I consider myself the “variety pack” in terms of creative output. I create murals, largely in collaboration with the Infinite Canvas program via Community Arts of Elmira; I have a sewing space called T.E.A, The Elmira Atelier, where I create one of a kind wearable art and accessories; I am a self published creative book author and illustrate for other authors; I am costume coordinator for a local college theater program. My series of books can be found on Amazon, just search my name or “Bunzie’s Bundalas”.
I illustrate a weekly humor column written by Jim Pfiffer called “Full of Wit”. Jim chats about his life and family and I add a fun digital graphic to each column. I love this collaboration!
When I’m not covered in paint or thread, you can find me sharing my creative adventures on my YouTube channel, Filomena Jack Studio. It’s my happy corner of the internet, where I post tutorials, art tips, and behind-the-scenes peeks into my creative process. Whether I’m working on a mural, experimenting with new techniques, or chatting about the joys and challenges of being an artist, my goal is to inspire YOU to dive into your own creative journey.
As a teacher (I’ve been teaching for about 30 years, WOW!), I’m passionate about helping people of all ages discover their artistic potential. Through workshops, community events, and my videos, I aim to make art fun, accessible, and empowering. I also believe art is a powerful tool for mental health and personal growth—it’s amazing what we can create when we open ourselves up to possibility!
If you’re in Elmira, keep an eye out for my murals, or pop by Filomena Jack Studio on YouTube to join me on this colorful, creative adventure. Let’s make something beautiful together!

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
As an artist and personal development coach, my ultimate goal is to inspire and uplift as many people as possible through thoughtful and meaningful creations. My work is about more than just art—it’s about connection, growth, and making the world a more compassionate place. Whether through my pieces or creative classes, I strive to spark positivity, reflection, and empowerment in others.
At the heart of my journey is a deep commitment to advocating for a kinder world, not just for people but for all living beings. As a plant-based/vegan advocate, I use my art to gently challenge perspectives and encourage consideration for all animals, not just the ones we keep as pets. Through creativity, I aim to cultivate empathy, opening minds and hearts to the beauty and value of every life.
I believe art is a powerful tool for change—both personally and globally. If you’re drawn to thoughtful, purpose-driven creativity or curious about plant-based living, I’d love for you to join me on this journey. Together, we can create a community that embraces kindness, compassion, and a shared vision for a brighter future.
Follow along for insights into my process, creative inspiration, and ways to engage with art that speaks to the soul. Let’s explore what’s possible when creativity meets purpose.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
As someone who has lived with anxiety and depression for much of my life, I’ve discovered a simple mantra that has become a guiding light during difficult times: “Your thoughts aren’t necessarily facts.” These words have helped me anchor my mind in reality, steering it away from the wild and often uncharted terrain of mental health challenges.
I encourage you to write this mantra down and revisit it daily. Reflect on it by asking yourself a few key questions:
Is this thought true?
Can I prove it?
Is it useful?
How would my life change if I let go of this thought?
These questions are gentle yet powerful tools to challenge unhelpful thoughts and cultivate a more grounded perspective. Remember, it’s okay to question the stories your mind tells you—they don’t define who you are.
