Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Filipe/Joana Oliveira. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Filipe/Joana, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, so one thing we think people don’t talk about nearly enough is investments – either time or money. What’s one of the best or worst investments you’ve made and what did you learned from the experience?

Shiping, Shipping, Shipping! Without a doubt the single best investment we made in our business. After a terrible experience with a standard delivery company, we decided we needed to change completely and focus on quality over cost. So, we researched and researched and eventually partnered with a great shipping company. It’s important to note that all of our consoles are unique and irreplaceable, some date back 50 years, some 70. We consider them to be pieces of art, therefore we shipped them as such: in custom-built wooden crate shipping. However, we fully understand how this has a higher price and PoBo covers a substantial part of the shipping costs.

Filipe/Joana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

We are PoBo Lifestyle – a family who moved from Portugal to Boulder (which was the inspiration for the brand name). Europeans at heart, we are passionate about effortless elegance that translates into carefully-designed and impeccably-executed objects.

The PoBo music consoles merge impeccable mid-century design with world-class sound systems. In essence, we source beautiful original unique consoles with mid-century modern design, refurbish them, and refit them with the latest modern technology. When we finish the process, the PoBo consoles are statement pieces that become the central point of decor in our clients’ homes, combined with all the characteristics of a high-end audio system: Consoles equipped with the right tube amplifiers, custom-fitted audio systems, and new-generation turntables.

Music, which is a big part of our personal lifestyle, combined with a certain elegant way of doing things are the fundamental aspects of our brand.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

There are a couple of “golden rules” that we subscribed to since the early stages of our business: 1. Be responsive to any and all contacts,
2. Treat our clients like we would like to be treated as clients, at all times.
3. Quality over quantity – we are very selective about the pieces we source and know we are working in a niche market. That is OK.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?

There are so many amazing entrepreneurship stories and examples! We are constantly inspired by other people and their businesses. A great way to find a lot of them is to listen to the podcast How I Built This with Guy Raz. It all comes full circle for us when we have the podcast streaming in one of our consoles while we brainstorm about PoBo Lifestyle, where we are, and what the future will hold.
