We were lucky to catch up with Few Blue recently and have shared our conversation below.
Few , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Well, it all started with the guys back in high school. The lead guitarist and drummer were a part of another band. They tried their hardest to play at bars when they were 15, but sometimes weren’t let in…. and collected gear and instruments for themselves. When they went to college, the band ended up splitting up as a few of them were moving on to different schools or states, but they had all this gear left over… and that’s when the idea of Few Blue was born!
After onboarding Cam as the lead singer, we all learned from each other. Most of what we have learned has been through our own mistakes and learning from them. We have had a lot of help and support along the way, a lot of advice given to us by amazing mentors and other bands who have been around the block, but for the first year, we were just learning by what we were doing and the feedback we were getting.
We don’t know if we would have done it any other way to speed up the process, we have already been moving so fast! Cam learned a lot from the guys when we found each other, and the guys learned a lot from Cam, especially when we started to turn this into a business.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Although the guys knew each other before, Few Blue was born at LSU, where we all went to college. We started by making our way around Baton Rouge and getting into all of those bars and venues. Once we caught on there, we knew we could make our way back to our hometown, New Orleans.
With some help from some close friends, we had our first show in New Orleans at Rock N Bowl – one of the bigger venues for local bands to play. We played at 3pm on a Wednesday, before operating hours, just to some friends and family, and the venue absolutely fell in love with us and invited us back for some opening shows. We spent about 9 months opening for other bands and finally got our headlining show and have been playing there since. Now we are on a roll and hustling to make things happen!
We are an original band that also does covers. We like to think that when people hear us play their favorite covers they can sing along to, they will eventually want to get to know us as an original band and listen to our own music. We think this strategy has been working well and we have new music on the way!
A question that we always get from others looking to get into what we are doing now is “How have y’all stuck together for so long?” It’s as simple as being a close knit group and communicating! We are all good friends and hang out when we aren’t performing. Music and the business is always on our minds and controls a lot of our conversations just because we are so passionate about it. We all want this to go well and take this far. We think that our audience can feel this connection on stage when we perform too – and that’s what sets us apart.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Building an audience on social media these days is so important! With the ability for anyone to “go viral” right now, posting on social media has become our main line of communication from us to our fans. We are always promoting our pages at shows so that people can keep up with us and give us feedback.
We try our best to make our page look professional and interesting. Almost every show has its own promotional flyer with a good pictures and a fun design. We get our fans involved in giveaways and scavenger hunts around the city we’ll be playing at. If you just get creative, there are so many things you can do to get an audience excited.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
On our first release, “So Damn Wrong” EP, we had some feedback that was expected, but also helped us a lot. This EP, the songs, and the art that was designed for it is all “in your face” with a whole lot of attitude. We think some people thought “wow, this is enthusiastic” when we first put it all out, but the process of writing and coming up with a piece of art is just that.
It was our first go at this, we didn’t even know we were capable of putting out music like this until we met Jack Miele and Kassie Netherland. They helped produce the demos we had and made us sound like real rockstars. We aren’t Taylor Swift… not every little lyric has a deep meaning behind it, we were just telling a story and making it catchy – and sometimes we were just cracking jokes and having fun making music with friends.
